I think the thing that sticks out with him, and we saw it on his first career point in Pitt, is that he's a fast skater but he doesn't really look scrambly when he has the puck; he has the poise to "hold onto pucks" and make a play.

Tocchet has pointed this out a couple of times too. He’s fast, strong forechecker, and is getting more confident at holding onto the puck and making a play.

Biggest thing was that both Miller and Pettersson were very good tonight. This is the first game since the first half of last season where both were above-average while playing C on different lines, and the team is just totally different when that's the case. If both those guys are going and playing to their potential, we're a Cup contender. If they aren't, we aren't.
Was thinking the same thing. That 1-2 punch at center, with Hughes on the back end and Demko in goal is ridiculous. And Hughes can play a lot better than he did tonight.

Desharnais' best game this season by a mile. Played like he had nothing to lose, was much more assertive and used his size effectively. Still very limited with the puck and ideally not a guy we should have in our top-6 going into the playoffs, but if he plays like this he can be a decent option for now. When he plays timid and passive like he has for most of the season, he's just completely ineffective.

Also one of Myers' best games of the season, when he plays like this it makes a big difference.

Joshua looked a bit more like himself, still a ways to go but maybe he can start to build some momentum.

I thought Suter had one of one of his weaker games of the season and Blueger uncharacteristically had a rough night. Brannstrom not great either.

I think a big part of the issue is that Tocchet hockey requires an incredible amount of energy. The Canaucks had the will and energy against teams like Florida and Colorado tonight.

But against Boston, they were just flat....and couldn't find that extra 5-10 percent effort.
I've thought this as well and I wonder if we just lack the size up front to realistically play that way. Besides the obvious problems we had in last year's playoffs, one of the things that stood out to me was how absolutely gassed the team started to look.

Yes. I've noticed this consistently. He's like the anti-Hoglander.

Wow! great win. I want to remain even-keeled though.
I'm about as ecstatic as when Canucks won 4-0, right before they lost 5-1 the next game.

Pleasantly surprised. In Mexico, so I couldn’t watch this game and called it quits when it was 00 near the end of the first period I must’ve missed the Canucks scoring first by a couple of minutes. Nice to have the win. But it sure would be great to string 3 or four wins together.

Edit - headed home today after two weeks in Mexico, haven’t been able to watch a game in that time. We will be home Wednesday morning and as I have been saying all year long one game doesn’t change how they are playing keep an even keel, and hope these guys play to their potential for a while

Canucks jeykell and hyde.

April and Willander can't come fast enough.

God damn, I know Joshua coming off cancer but the guy has 4 shots in 16 games. That's the lowest shot per game in the league.

According to money puck, Canucks best player for 5v5 "high danger shot attempts per 60" is Arshdeep Bains and he's 154th. Boeser at 166th. Debrusk 215th. Heinen 233rd.

Raty and Joshua are 446 and 447 out of 455.

The Canucks are generating pretty much nothing 5v5.

no idea if this is actually true or just a hallucination - but this seems accurate?
ChatGPT gave me like three different answers. So I'm not sure, but a lot of changes were indeed made coming out of the lockout. What seems to be the case is that the rule I'm talking about was first put in for the 1990-91 season (this was the last one before the curved blue crease).

So, it's 3 seconds after Sherwood's shorty I turn to my buddy and say "that guys getting a hat trick". I just don't miss on Sherwood.

I do miss my orange toque. I chucked the f***er and it immediately deployed parachute style 4 rows ahead of me and you f***ers didn't toss it forward. I want it back.

Who let's a guy score from behind the icing line by bouncing the puck off your head?

Oilers goalies…

This group of players seems to be falling back into some bad habits (ie. starting slow, not looking prepared, being wildly inconsistent), which they have now done with basically every coach thus far after an initial bump in performance. Never know which version of the team will show-up at this point.

The defense is awful outside of Hughes/Hronek, and whichever of the rest of the dmen decides to take their turn in the rotation of temporarily being slightly better than a bottom pairing player.

Get a defense that can transition the puck and watch the team become a lot more consistent overnight.

Like watching EP buzz around having a good shift and he has to pass it to Juulsen to keep the play moving, and Juulsen promptly turns it over, that causes huge problems when its a consistent phenomenon. Players eventually either play suboptimally trying to play around the bad players or lose confidence/stop trying as hard when they're stuck with grenade handlers who are going to instantly ruin their hard work. To say nothing of how it kills the actual play itself, consistently.

i only saw the third but this feels so accurate. there was an early shift where debrusk and a dman had the pick pinned on the end boards and petey battled it free and when they collapsed on him and both debrusk and sasson were just standing there not open, he had to dump it back to juulsen twice before juulsen forced a dump to the other side that got partially picked off and that ended possession

and i can just feel petey thinking, why don’t i ever get to play with hughes?

in that middle period after brannstrom learned how to get shots through but before he lost the coaches’ trust, he made such a difference as a second option.

We're on pace for about 101 points or so. But, the schedule will become harder now. And when playoff push ramps up, it's gonna get rough.

Well, prepare for TDL I suppose?

Opening Statement
  • Reminding everyone that Demko is a good goaltender
  • Miller’s line was great at shutting down MacKinnon
  • Pettersson’s line was really good
  • Sherwood, and his line, had an unreal game
  • Blueger’s line was good; Hoglander gave them some juice
  • Defence were really good
  • Juulsen and Soucy stood out on the penalty kill
  • Is only going to take a couple of questions
Sherwood
  • When he talked to Sherwood this summer, Sherwood told him he has more to give offensively
  • An aggressive guy that you need on the ice and gives them juice
Penalty Kill
  • Foote did a great job with the game plan; especially on the PK gameplan
  • Avalanche are a “hell of a team”
Powerplay
  • Had talked to Miller about moving him to the 2nd unit
  • They had possession and Hughes had “lungs in him” so he’s earned the right to play the whole powerplay if he wants
Great Game, Bad Game, Great Game
  • Getting guys like Demko and Miller strengthened the leadership group and will settle everyone down
  • Have rarely put a bunch of stinkers together
  • Kudos to the player for tonight

well kind of fitting to quiet the drama - everyone played their assess off for a desevered win but no one but kiefer sherwood got goals and only the role players got points.

That's the sign of a great team game where the star players are working their asses off like everyone else to contain an incredibly good offensive team. Do that and get goals from whomever you can. Doesn't get any better for me. That's how you win!

🎯
Last night was the first game in awhile where they managed to sustain offensive zone time for the first 2/3 of the game. (Before sitting on the lead).

Their consistently low shot totals is a good indicator for their inability to generate much offence. I assume if has something to do with Tocchets system cuz they have the horses to get goals and the anemic powerplay suffers from the same problem, despite the talented personnel.
