I don’t think it’s preposterous to call Brannstrom the 3rd best defencemen for a stretch of time but that was far more of an indictment of the rest of the defence’s play at that time than a compliment to Brannstrom.

He was the 3rd most effective relative to his usage. No argument there.

But he was getting 70% o-zone starts against weak opposition. It’s basically a formula for any ok-ish defender to look fantastic.

They have way harder matchups to deal with. VD and EB (so close to perfect comedy wise haha) are getting shelter from the storm to the extent it's possible. Soucy and Myers are being thrown to the wolves.

I get that, but the facts were that Brannstrom was playing well in his (sheltered) role and Soucy and Myers were getting buried in their (tough) role.

It was enough of a difference that it made sense to give Brannstrom some more responsibility / tougher minutes just to see how it'd look. Obviously it didn't work because he is either outmatched in a tougher role or it just coincided with a dip in his play in general.

And I think the important thing overall is what we (and hopefully the organization) learned from it: the bottom-4 desperately needs an upgrade ASAP.

I think part of the problem with me for the Brannstrom scratching isn’t that I think he’s way better than Juulsen, Desharnais or Friedman, or really anyone other than Hughes, it’s that this defense is horribly structured with defensemen that can’t move the puck to save their life and it’s leading to a terribly anemic offense. So, ya, Brannstrom isn’t great defensively, but neither really are his competition, and if you need to shelter him ON HOME ICE to get some good results offensively, then you do that and thank your lucky stars that you have another defensemen capable of making a breakout pass.

Yeah, this. I think the extent of his good play was a bit over-rated but they blatantly need him in the lineup to add an extra puck mover.

I think YOU hit the nail on the head.
