Hughes ppg - 1.21 Makar 1.16 Hughes starting to pull ahead a bit. If he is leading or close to tied with Makar at season end, he absolutely deserves another Norris.

He honestly deserves Hart consideration for how important he has been to the team this year. I’m guessing no other superstar player has had almost all the next best players miss large chunks of games or struggled.

He does deserve serious considerations.

But we all know that shit is going to McDavid.

Very impressive win. Such a positive win, top to bottom everyone was pulling on the rope tonight - no passengers.

Joshua, Forbort, Freidman, JT in his return, Hughes + Lankinen playing outstanding, Heinen, Sasson, Blueger, Juulsen, exc. exc. Could say a good word about everyone.

My big takeaways are;
(1) nice to see what the forward group is capable of at full health
(2) when healthy Vinnie Desharnias is the #9 Dman with Forbort back & how Freidman/Juulsen have played (+Brannstrom).

This team has real potential. They won't get 50 wins but if they can add another Top 4 Dman they could have a better shot in the playoffs than last season.

desharnais won't be here in a week or two

either they're adding someone w him and hoglander in some package or they're going to take the cap space and figure it out later

juulsen supplanting him recently and now friedman playing over him.. it's totally done.

Juulsen is definitely ahead of him (he really seems to find his game when he's given a consistent spot) and Friedman is looking way better than him too. Then Brannstrom + Forbort were already ahead.

I agree with you, whether they can move him that quickly or not (I hope they can) he's no long for Vancouver. And to be fair to him I think he's probably a bit better than he's shown, but he's entirely unnecessary for us.

I don't think he's better than he's shown, because I don't think he's actually been that bad. He legit just can't skate nor has he shown any improvement in his puck movement.

He's not stupid so his errors aren't glaring, but he's just so damn slow so he's constantly losing on the ice.

The only way he was going to work here was if he was supplanting myers.

Genuinely feel like there are some really bad teams in this league that would benefit from playing him 12 minutes a game and using him on the PK alongside a puck mover like Brannstrom because that fit actually did work ok in those sheltered minutes, but yeah, time to move on.

But I don't think he's fit in with how they want to play as a team b/c of our team struggles. Maybe thats also largely just his inability to handle the puck, but I don't think we've had that level of team game to make it easier on him to assimilate like they hoped when they signed him.

Like with Myers last season, he found a better game within that structure & we haven't had that same team game for Desharnias to grow within.

Regardless if he can't handle the puck better than guys like Juulsen & Freidman the writing is on the wall.

We just played the Stanley Cup champions. We look good sadly I didn’t see a minute of it being that I’m in Mexico and getting a ton of dental work done it. Anyhow, the bitching about VD is about standard. We are playing great, but there’s always gonna be one guy or maybe two, that her not making the grade. This will be the standard pitching by Canuck fans for the next hundred years. I mean, how can we not take this win and celebrate. yes we miss Hronek he would make us look even better. And everyone keeps mentioning that we need another top 40 man without suggesting how we take care of the cap implications.

They never were going to have the time. I honestly felt it was apparent going into the season that he had to figure it out quickly. There wasn't time to let him grow -- he had to hit the ground running. Him and Forbort were the only $1m+ salaries on the backend w/o trade protection. They were always going to be the main fall guys if something wasn't working. DD hasn't gotten any better. Halfway to the TDL.

It had to happen quickly. Yeah the environment sucked with all the injuries we've had, and that they've been trying to change how we play. I don't think the signing made any sense. We all know Myers should ideally be on a 3rd pairing come playoff time, and that they need to allocate the salary towards a top four guy. They're also, as you mentioned, trying to adjust how we play to be more high tempo and offensive to create rush chances, and VD makes that impossible when he's on the ice.

It's not even bitching. It's the reality, and it's been coming for a few weeks now. Not every signing works out, and that's fine to have some misses. It's just recognizing where we are. I'm not even mad about how it played out.. just curious to see what happens in the next week or two.

Just got back from the game. Some notes:
- Cambie Bridge construction is horrible. Why?!?
- Costco pizza, chicken strips and fries, drink for under $10 is elite
- Sasson is an NHL player, wow what a performance on the forecheck today. Counted at least 4 takeaways.
- Hughes is as polarizing as McDavid. Every time he has the puck it’s going to shock and awe the crowd. Generational skating talent
- Friedman is awesome. The amount of shit disturbers we have is great
- Forbort was really good at defending the net and making clears. It’s clear now that Desharnais should never be in again..
- Miller’s speed down the middle was hugely missed. It backed off Florida every shift
- Kevin Lankinen
- AJ Greer is such a plug
- Soucy is slowly having a renaissance. Still not fully there but miles better than before
- Brock Boeser

Great team game...No passengers and excellent at taking away rebounds back door and high danger opportunities. May have been outshot by a large margin but was no incentive to attack with numbers and open up to outnumbered chances vs sitting back into strong positioning

Nice to see Joshua continue to improve. Him and Garland are getting better and better 5v5

Miller Hoglander Boeser together basically added a top6 line we didnt have previously and the 4th line was outstanding. Sasson great game

40 was pretty quiet but did a great job defensively. Debrusk and Sherwood are exactly what the forward group needed from last year we look deep and dangerous throughout at forward

Forbort and Friedman brought the grit game and made good plays. Nice job by those 2. Forbort is a calming influence and smart heavy player somewhat like Cole. Skating was ok today see if he can maintain it. If he can that helps huge.

Lankinen and Demko in net and our forward group is looking almost as good as anyones. Find the right D be healthy and were looking like a contender.

Hughes is and should be MVP at this stage of the season. Just have to enjoy and admire.

Good take. It seemed like the way they sold it him needing time was inevitable. That said I expected (given the contract not his reputation) a slightly higher baseline - not costing us goals every game he's in the lineup.

I agree the signing was never good, but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt given their record of finding undervalue guys & how much a bigger blue-line did help us last season, but we're on the same page that I never liked it either & had doubts like you.

His skating isn't great but he's big enough that he covers space, its just his inability to handle the puck (Gudbranson flashbacks) & misreading the play costing the team goals is too much for a guy like him.

Fingers crossed they can figure something out, I'm sure they'll find a way.

The issue with VD is totally contract related. If he was a <1M guy it would be totally fine, nice depth even having a huge guy that's a very good PKer as your 8/9D. But they made a bet.

I'm not trying to be negative, I'm feeling very positive about the team right now, but his situation is one that would be better to resolve if possible for both sides. And also that's part of the cap implications.

Hoglander + Desharnais is 3M+ this season, 5M+ next season. There's a window to add a larger salary player with retention and/or cap accrual

Great post overall, and especially this.

Trying to enjoy Hughes as much as I can, this is one of the best players to ever wear our jersey.

I think in the bigger picture (cup hopes aside) getting Hughes locked in to stay in Van is Rutherford's biggest obligation to the market. And at this point I'd give Quinn a blank cheque.

An underrated thing about Hughes being so good is that he neutralizes chaotic Myers and turns him into a safer player who plays the Hronek role of deferring to Hughes. This leaves Soucy to do his thing away from Myers, which has helped both players.

Agreed. Myers has been better with Hughes over this stretch than any other time they've been paired together in the past. A few seasons ago they were paired together and Myers was dragging Hughes down and they both looked awful together. Have to think this has more to do with Hughes taking his game to another level than anything to do with Myers.
