Petey should be the main weapon the PP. Both with his wrister and his one-timer. But he's so reluctant to use either. Coaches should make it a priority to force him to shoot like at least 3 times per PP.

He should be coming off the right wall and looking to snipe like Naslund.
The weird thing is I have no sense of whether Petey’s wrister/one-timer has been affected by injuries because of his absolute refusal to use either. I can’t tell if those weapons of his are still there somewhere because of a near-zero sample size of late. he hasn’t used those weapons in ages. I guess the hope is it’s a mental thing, but very hard to ascertain.

I really don't like how Tocchet plays favorites. He's a lot like Torts in that way. This old school brand of coaching needs to die.

I hope people don't expect too much out of Joshua right out of the gate.

This is a guy who has struggled a bit with conditioning and getting up to speed in both of the last two years and now this year his body has been through cancer treatments and he's coming in having much less summer training and no training camp. I suspect he's going to be a step behind the pace for his first month or so and probably should have his minutes limited.

He always has slow starts in general.

I don't know what it is about the Devils, but even when they were bad a few years ago, the Canucks always seemed to lay an egg when they played them.

Their forwards are quick, and if Markstom gets in a zone, he can be well night unbeatable. Got to get that PP going somehow. The Devils will take some penalties, with a lot of hooks and holds.

An underrated player is Suter, he seems to do the little things well, capable of playing anywhere in the lineup, versatile, responsible, consistent, durable, high hockey IQ, good passes through traffic etc. good player.

He plays the guys that work hard and support their teammates. Puck support is a thing. It's fascinating that he's learned this over his 50 + years in hockey. Canucks are too spread out. Puck support and 10 - 15 foot passes is older than dirt.

I like how they stumbled into Brannstrom trying to ditch Poolman, otherwise the defense would be a complete disaster. We're now poised to play Juulsen (who to my recollection hasn't really had a solid game in nearly a calendar year), over our two NHL defense UFAs. Maybe we should stop letting Tocchet and Foote have input on "project defensemen".
Yep. Credit to Allvin to getting him, but it was pretty much accidental (clearly, considering they left him in the AHL to start). The defense would be horribad without Brannstrom.

If only Allvin listened to some posters here...would have a ready made, legit NHL pair with Brannstrom and Kovacevic. For cheap! If only anyone suggested them...

Please be A but that's also 3.5 million in the press box.
Brannstrom has to be playing. He is their 3D on ability right now.

Hoglander had a bad game so him and Sprong can do their thing on the fourth line but Bains isn't the guy for top six role on this team at this time.
I like the kid but he needs way more reps in the bottom six/Abbotsford first.
Bains is fine on 4th line but I don't get where this obsession is coming from to keep trying him in the top 6.
Yeah. I don't get it. I like Bains, and he's a nice story. I even get that Tocc has issues with Hoglander's two-way game at times, so he gets demoted. But I don't get bumping up Bains. It's very obvious he doesn't have the pace or processing to hang on an NHL scoring line (at least right now).
Interesting that they want Petey to use his PP one-timer even less than he is...I feel like they're passing too much right now and not pulling the trigger in the slot and circles, it's often Hughes taking the shot. I miss seeing Petey's one-timers and wish they brought that play back a bit more, it seems like teams know he's in a bit of a slump and not really covering that shot immediately for now.
Petey is obviously slumping, so that's part of it. But another big part of it is just a league-wide shift in penalty killing scheme. More and more teams are going primarily with a Diamond PK scheme, rather than the Wedge+1 we used to exclusively see in seasons past. The Diamond PK eliminates a lot of flank shooting opportunities, such that flank PP shots really aren't as common (and not nearly as dangerous) as they used to be. Standing around waiting for flank shot one-timers on the PP isn't going to work.

The biggest exploit of this is to try and create chances in the middle of the ice. Ironically, since trading Horvat, the Canucks have not had an effective bumper player on the PP. I don't think it's a coincidence the PP has looked a lot worse.

Players can't 'cheat' out there with Tocchet behind the bench. He knows exactly how he wants his players and team to play.

And when they don't reach that level--like the last game against Carolina--he's not about to pull any punches with individual guys.

That's what makes his post-game pressers so much more entertaining and 'must-listens' compared to the mundane offerings of other NHL coaches.

I mean the fans and the media can tell who's playing well out there and who isn't. But when coach comes on after the game and whitewashes the entire thing, it's a bit disappointing. I remember Green's post-games were excruciating at times.

So last game, it was Hoglander and Pettersson who were in the coach's crosshairs, and their ice-time reflected how he felt.

Weren’t you not concerned about the defence in the summer because they fit our defensive system?

Part of what makes Draisatl so dangerous on the PP is that he positions himself at a bad angle to avoid the coverage. If you can make that shot like he can it brings back that shot from the flank. If you cheat down to take that away he can just move back to a normal flank position. But it only works if you can reliably make that bad angle shot.

1. I wasn't. The few games of data we have lessened my confidence in the blueline group. We'll see as the sample size expands.

2. I assumed an in-season upgrade would be on the table (and likely will happen).

3. Didn't preclude Allvin from making other tweaks. I was also saying they should sign Brannstrom in the offseason, and I've been saying they should have targeted Kovacevic for over a year.

Yep. The Draisaitl bad-angle look is a way to get around the Diamond PK taking away your standard flank shots. The coverage isn't going to want to drift that far away and expose the net front or leave a gaping hole in the middle of the ice.

Like you said though, you can really only run that if you have a guy that can reliably make that shot.

Now that is f***ing funny.
If he listened to you, he might lose his ability to read.

Didn't they target him in the off-season? So although the entire situation did end up being quite fortunate for us, I don't think it was purely accidental. Also a possibility they had other options on the table to dump Poolman.

I get that typical PK's take that shot away but sometimes when you have a plus shot (arguably plus-plus shot when he's at his best) you just have to use it. Force the goalie to make a nice save, a lot of times they just won't. It's not like all of Ovechkin's goals are labeled for the top corner, he's just willing to let them go and see what happens.

IMO the coaching staff needs to figure out a way to make Petey the focal point of the PP so much so that the PK has to plan for him specifically which will open up space for the others.

Re Brannstrom: He signed for one-year at 900K, so if they wanted him, I don't think it would have taken much more. And when they traded for him, they started him in the AHL, so to me doesn't really seem like they viewed him as a guy that would help the NHL roster.

Re the PK: Even Ovechkin is scoring a lot less from the flank on the PP. The days of OV ripping in snipes from the OV spot are over. League-wide, teams PK structures are taking away those shots. Yes I would like to see Petey be more assertive there, but stationary flank shots really aren't an efficient way to generate offense on the PP anymore.

It is a weird shot to be so proficient at.

Draisaitl is one of the more unique superstars we currently have in the league.
