Post-Game Talk: GM 77 | Golden Knights def. Canucks | 3-2 (Hoglander, Raty) | Banging in the Nails.

I think the team has a lot of solid things to build on but in Vegas you see the thing they've only had for stretches of the beginning of last season - commitment to defence that leads to an unrelenting waves on offence.

Now I would say that a big part of 1st half 2023-2024 was counterpunching off turnovers. We just haven't done that for most of the season. We've backed up at our own blueline a lot more and that has led to the disturbing cycle that we say at the 2nd half of 2023-2024 and all through the playoffs: get pushed into your own zone, barely get it out because you have only one puck moving pair, then get pushed back into your own zone again. Rinse and repeat by the other side.

Again, I think they've played a lot better as a team despite some of the losses down the stretch. Defence is a lot better due to the sea of Petterssons, but seems like we always have a couple of guys who are inconsistent and drag down their pairs.

As much as I love Quinn, and as much as I think he has greatly levelled up his defensive game with smart positioning and good sticks - he's always going to be prone to some untimely gaffes. Multiple gaffes if he's having an off-night. But he always makes up for it by being arguably the best defenceman in the NHL. Here's the thing - OUR OTHER PAIRS CANNOT DO THIS. This is not like Vegas where they have Pietrangelo and Theodore and they are big and can do everything. Quinn's pair will more than offset their mistakes. But to me that puts the onus on the other pairs to be as steady as possible, make as few mistakes as possible. BUT they also have to get the puck to the forwards. We've seen what happens with this team when two pairs are just hammering it off the boards out of the zone.

This is my issue with Myers, even in his lucid periods he eventually creates too much chaos and we don't have the defensive makeup even with EP2 and EP3 to sustain that in the long term.

I farted before that third Vegas goal

It is now in scripture (until next HF meltdown)

Shoutout to Olofsson for putting the nail in the coffin with 3 minutes left.

Making the playoffs does nothing for anyone aside from ownership for their 2 home games of playoff revenue, that 3rd period was the difference between a playoff team and whatever you wanna call our roster atm. We’ll be back next season for sure.

Mancini had a tough one but really drawing any conclusions from these garbage time games is pretty futile.

Would say Karlsson is looking closer to being NHL caliber but lots of players look ok in these late season situations and then come October they are back to looking like minor leaguers.

Also the idea of some carry over in momentum to next season never seems to pan out.

Just finish as low as you can maybe that helps in the draft.

I renounce the hockey gods. I should have known after 2011 that there is no such thing as justice in our game
