GDT: Gm 40: Ducks at Sharks, @7:30pm Pacific

Also I still really hate the Bally Sport shit, can they please just go back to how the scoreboard was with Fox Sports? Taking up like 1/10th of the TV screen with this ugly ass scoreboard and ticker is gross. It's going to be even more gross if they start to use it to push gambling crap too.

Karlsson has really struggled defensively tonite.
He looks so bad sometimes that it’s actually confusing

His injuries just must be horrendous. He can hardly pivot sometimes. He’s still so amazing at times, but just looks so bad defensively

A very good game for all around. Heinen doing a lot of little things that the SJ Sharks commentators praised his play all game. We got our fourth line again! In the words of Staind, "It's been awhile... since I last saw you." Drysdale with that vision on the PP. I teared up... we finally scored a PP goal! We're so very lucky to have Drysdale! I dunno what or how, but Carrick needs to be on the NHL club. We need some grit like that... plus, Dirk will be pleased.

Yay for points!

Heinen was rock solid tonight. Always winning his battles and getting the puck up ice, and his pass on Henrique's goal was very good.

I just saw the highlights, the Ducks scored an empty netter with 730 to go? What the heck was the Sharks thinking?

Karlsson was always an extremely good skater, that ankle/Achilles injury just took that away. He may continue to contribute 35-40 points a season (in a normal season) but that's just not enough when he's getting beat. It wouldn't be enough if he was only getting 6-7 mil per season. His possession numbers this year are bad, and he's got more giveaways than takeaways.

Glad he's on the Sharks until the inevitable heat death of the universe.

Well that was worth staying up past 1am for. I think my fellow east coasters would agree. Lol.

Happy for guys like Backes and Deslauries, to get some points, but the kids getting on the scoresheet was huge and they looked very good. Missing some key players so good to see guys stepping up, and Gibson looked good and locked in last night.

I feel if this team is mostly healthy and locked in they are not a bottom team. Add some young talent like Drysdale and Zegras and another Top 6 scorer move on from some guys add new blood, and maybe things are much better next season. It’s going to take time but think they are trending in the right direction. Time will tell.

Last night's game reminded about VGK's first year when they had no first line, but a bunch of 2nd liners. This is what the Sharks' commentators cited about the Ducks last night before the game started.

Although a lot of people are citing the youth contingent, we had a more stable set of veteran players to have a good blend. Manson, Heinen, Backes, and Rico were putting in yeoman's work. Carrick's good play with leadership grit he brought from the AHL gives the Ducks some sandpaper it was missing. Gibby was also back on his game too! We weren't flashy or fancy, but we worked it last night and it felt good to watch as it lead to an actual blowout win against a team trying to vie for a playoff spot.

I've been harping on how the org has been using the NHL level as a development league as opposed to using its AHL club for that path. Instead of throwing Steel out there game after game struggling, we should have had Carrick here all long and let Steel continue to develop in the AHL. Now, Steel can't be sent down next year because he loses his waiver eligibility and can't be sent down this year because he's on the IR. Besides Carrick at center, we could have had Backes as the 3C instead of Steel. Tack on Zegras' extended stay with the NHL club when he wasn't helping the team all around and needed far more seasoning, then we can see we were pushing the youth movement for the second season in a row. In the AHL, both Carrick and De Leo stood out in every game played there, including with games Zegras was in. Zegras has flashes of brilliance in the AHL that were able to be capitalized into points, but the rest of his game on the ice was lacking. Carrick or De Leo should have been promoted before Zegras to the NHL level. Drysdale also performed far better than Zegras in the AHL outside of scoring, but Zegras gets the call.

Steel and Zegras both were being pushed at the expense of the NHL club. I recall many people saying that Zegras is chippy and the org needs that, but Zegras doesn't go beyond that. Last night, Carrick brought a big bang to where Des had to joke about Carrick taking away fights from him.

We wasted Zegras' ELC, which is compounded by the #'s game to not burn a year from becoming a FA. We wasted Steel's waiver eligibility. If we sent Steel to the AHL and he tore it up there, then we could have improved his trade stock despite struggling at the NHL level. okay... rant over about the misuse of prospects. We could have put out a better product as a team on NHL ice.

The guys have really been standing up for themselves and for each other a lot more over the last few weeks, and I think that stems from Getz setting the tone with that stuff all of a sudden. They're a team. Often not a very good team but they do act like a team. I don't remember that last season.
There have been a lot of sneaky positives this season. The positives you hope for during a rebuild. I think next season could be our last one at the bottom of the league

Also this team is a lot better without Larsson in the lineup. The only reason he will still be here past the trade deadline is if he’s deemed expansion fodder. I think he’s probably played his last game here

Yeah and I don't really think it's that sneaky. The standings results are terrible but the team clearly made significant progress in the rebuild this season. Honestly I'll be pretty surprised if we're near the bottom again next year. Some of that is dependent on personnel decisions and such.

I go back and forth. I look at our defense pairings when healthy and I start to think this is a middle of the pack team. I know we say it every year, but if we could ever keep Lindholm on the ice for the full season, we'd be a different team.

Then I remember forwards exist and I get sad again.
