One of my favorites growing up. Got the chance to meet him a couple times through some off-ice events sometime around 2010. Big dude, at least at that point. Really nice guy and was gracious to everyone there. RIP.

As a young die hard fan of this sh*t team he was one of the few bright lights we had to cheer for and gave us a reason to be proud to be a Canucks fan. I was at the game when he scored the famous penalty shot goal. I've met the man several times in person an he was always extremely nice and kind to everyone. A true Canuck.

I had the good fortune to see his NHL debut where he wore #66 and fought both Dave Manson and Stu Grimson (not at the same time... he wouldn't take on whole teams until later). We had been pushed around for the better part of a decade by the Semenkos, McSorleys and Proberts of the league and with Gino we finally had our deterrent... which was an important aspect of the game at the time.
With the arrival of Linden in '88, Odjick in '90 and Bure in '91, the fortunes of our sad sack franchise finally took a turn for the better.
RIP Gino
