Has their team or players invited to camp been named yet? They had a strong draft and it will be interesting to see who makes the team and how they do.

I think that it's safe to say that: Rieder, Kuehnhackl, Abeltshauser, Grubauer, Noebels, Hofflin and Elsner will all make the team, but who will be there beyond those guys? I think Latta and Keil have a shot too, but I can't say for certain.

I think this probably is the roster from summer training camp, but the official roster for the WJC hasn´t been released by the DEB yet.

Grubauer's first name is Philipp not Thomas. ;)

Wow, a lot more CHL players than I expected. 8 by my count? Who are the players to watch for this team? I know Tom Kuenhackl has done really well so far in Windsor, but who else?

Yeah I knew that. Why did I write Thomas? Thanks for the correction.

I'd say Tobias Rieder is the most dangerous guy offensively and Grubauer has the talent and experience to steal a game. Abeltshauser is a big guy and in his second CHL season already, he should be a leader on defense. I've seen Treutle live a couple of times, kid's a rebound machine and scrambles a lot. Höfflin (voted top forward) and Noebels (top scorer with 19 points in 5 games) were very good at the U18 Div-I tournament last year. Don't know much about the others.

The drafted players are Kühnhackl (110th 2010 PIT), Grubauer (112th 2010 WAS), Höfflin (151st 2010 CHI) and Abeltshauser (163rd 2010 SJ). Rieder is the big German draft hope for 2011.

Abeltshauser isn't exactly a world beater. Halifax is pretty bad this year and I've heard a few fans speculate they might move him to bring in a better Euro next year.

Höfflin had a really slow start in the QMJHL but he is getting better and better since he was moved back to center. He has developed a great chemistry with Ryan Bourque as they are two speedy forwards. He missed three games because of a concussion at the beginning of December but before that he was on a roll. He has been frequently named in the three stars recently. I think the biggest challenge was to get used to the physical part of the game.

David Elsner was also drafted by the Preds in the 7th round.

Maybe you were thinking of Greiss? ;)

I think this is one of, if not, the best German team of the last 10-15 years. And still it will be difficult to avoid relegation. Our goalies have to be at the top of their game and while guys like Kühnhackl, Höfflin, Rieder, Noebels and Braun do possess a lot of offensive skill, I'm afraid they will have to work a lot on the defensive end.

The defense really worries me. Abeltshauser is nice player to have on your team, but if he is, on paper, your best defender then you're going to have a problem, unless he brings his best game and guys like Bittner, Woidtke or Mapes really step up their game.

Well, the other players in the CHL have already been mentioned, as was David Elsner.

Among those who are playing in Germany, I would look out for Laurin Braun, Matthias Plachta and Norman Hauner among the forwards, and for Corey Mapes and Dominik Bittner on defense.

Personally I really hope Braun does well. He is a small (5'10'') but feisty winger winger who is capable of scoring but is also a hard worker.

I'm missing defender Pascal Zerressen. The guy is becoming a beast.

There is a good mix offensively. You have leaders like Plachta, El-Sayed and Kühnhackl and guys who can score like Braun, Noebels and Rieder. I think this team will be able to create more puck posession than many people think. But I do agree that we need outstanding goaltending. I would have preferred Niederberger over Treutle as the back-up for Grubauer.

I'd blow my load if Kuhnhackl did a Niederreiter (ie. dominate out of nowhere on a team not expected to do much). :D

I think today Treutle proved to be the right choice with 42 saves for his first DEL-Shutout ;)
He started the last 3 games after Danny Taylor went down with only 4 goals against and 96,2SV% ;)

He is definately somebody to watch (Big and skilled)

Just don't let him handle the puck too much ;)
He likes to go after every puck, yet sometimes waits too long to make the play, in the last three games alone he lost the puck to an opponent four times. Luckily the opponent couldn't get shots of on any of those situations.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Treutle is the backup. He was Grubauer's backup in the summer games, and would have been the starter in the games played during the season, if not for an injury. Plus, he has played the most DEL-games of all the possible options, with very good stats and performances to boot.

Grubauer will play most of the games. Rieder and Kuhnhackl are not only the biggest talents but also have a chemistry together because they played for the same junior team and first pro season last year in Landshut (german 2nd league).

Seems very likely since Frankfurt airport closed down completely because of the weather this morning.
It opened again a few hours ago but who knows how long they'll have to wait.

Yeah, quite a few players were stuck. They tried again next morning and got one player on his way to Toronto, while the rest had to stay behind again. Apparently the rest of the team is supposed to arrive this evening, but who knows whether that'll actually happen.

Plus, a lot of equipment was lost or didn't get there in time, so they had to buy new stuff in America. Not just sticks, some players needed a complete set of equipment.

They got stuck at the Munich airport on Sunday already and are now one by one arriving in North America. Most of the equipment still hasn't arrived and they now have to buy new stuff. Especially new sticks and skates take time to get used to though. very bad start into the tournament.

As a Hawks fan that is nice to hear

But I am not a big believer of QMJHL as far as a developer of talent. I view it as a lesser league then CHL and WHL and also think US development is better as well

Hopefully Hofflin continues to improve
