Good luck to Team Italy at this year's event. Italy's other one of those nations that you wouldn't think plays hockey but does.

Well, not really  Few villages near the Alps play it, most of the Italians don't really know what hockey is.

This is gonna be a tough year for team Italy, the generational gap is going to play a big role. Bernard most likely will be the starting goalie as Dennis won't play and Bellissimo doesn't have the game practice.

I wonder if Gino and Paul Cavallini could come out of retirement and make this squad. :sarcasm:

Interviewed Andreas Bernard today for a feature article for IIHF.com

It should be posted before the Worlds start.

Anyone know if Italy sent out their best roster for their friendly games against Kazakhstan?

Answered this in the Kazakhstan thread by mistake. They played without Scandella, Iannone, Sirianni, Egger maybe some other not so important players too.

Iannone is no longer an active hockey player, Sirianni had a very bad season and this year he's not with the team. Italy has also a player in the AHL, Thomas Larkin (yes, he was really born in Italy and yes, he has really started playing hockey in Italy), who is currently with the Springfield Falcons. If they will lose tonight the last game of the serie against the Providence Bruins, may be he will join the team tomorrow.

I guess Bellissimo will be the starting goalie in all the games, with or without game practice. He's far more experienced than Bernard and he is Italian Canadian. As you for sure already know, those two factors are very important ones in Italian hockey when a coach has to make a decision.

Btw, why is Luciano Aquino never playing for Italy? He just signed with Farjestad, he would be pretty much the best player on the roster.

Because he's refusing to play for Italy as a protest against the Italian hockey federation. He told he does because in his opionion it's unjust that import players with Italian passport are considered as foreign players or at least don't have the same status as local players. He might be wrong or he might be right, but that decision was not made by the Italian federation, it's an agreement between the clubs. I guess he is absolutely not interested in playing for Italy and all is just an excuse.
