Day 7 of the state fair and the space needle dies. She's officially shut down the rest of the fair. That's gotta suck.

I've never really understood the appeal of the state fair. I've always wanted to like it, because nearly everyone I care about seems to, but to me it seems like too many people in too small of a space, and the only thing to do is wait in lines all day to buy overpriced food. I've seen a couple shows there, too, but I've seen those same shows elsewhere and enjoyed them more in a different venue.

Maybe somebody can explain it to me, or maybe I'm just the wrong type of person for it. Not everyone likes everything after all.

I think it's definitely not something to do every year. One every 5 years at the most. Not enough change from year to year.

Funny(?) story. First day of the fair, 9 emergency gall bladder surgery’s were done on fair goers.

I'm excited for this to come out. So much potential in this idea, I really hope it doesn't lay an egg.

Came home on Friday from a one week trip to Germany. You can buy booze at midnight from a bakery/kiosk at a railway station. What a country.

If it does, I don't want to see what comes out of the egg. Looks pretty cool. I sort of wish I had Appltv to watch some of their shows.
They do have some truly great shows:

The Foundation
Ted Lasso
Severance
Succession
The Last of Us (Think it's an HBO show but on Apple TV as well)
You

Hit me up in PM, I got you covered.

This has been happening to me with a lot of streaming services lately. I'm really just waiting for the day when all the streamers die off except Netflix, Apple, Disney, and Amazon. So about 20 years from now I'll have a lot of bingeing to do.

What about "Silo?" I read the Wool series about a decade ago and I guess it is based off of that. I thought that one looks pretty good, too. But yes, I have heard good things from all of the above as well. Just too many things to watch and too little money to spend. lol

Lol I am sure there will come a time when this will all be possible.

Quit training, didn't like it, etc?

I've been training three years but out with bulged disc and popped shoulder. Realized I was spending 80 percent of my time training, helping teach, or thinking about it. Probably not healthy.

I liked it when i took it almost 30 years ago, but simply didn't have time to do it for more than a few months. I am getting old now, but would like to pick it up again, as it's hard to beat their groundwork techniques.

As a friend of mine said, tap early, tap often, and avoid the Testosterone laden young guys who are out to prove themselves.

I would suggest avoiding clubs/classes who glorify competition and toughness. The two people i trained were all about technique over strength, and had an almost gentle way of running a class, even though they were world class baddasses. Injuries are part of martial arts training, but you want to limit them as much as possible.

Nice! How is your grappling game?

Kudos to you - I'd love to learn muy thai, clinch work, more wrestling, etc. but too old and gotta show up to work, haha.

Yep, young guys or big spazzy white belts have the biggest egos.

Even though I am out injured, I still think the skill and workout in and of itself sparring are great for physical/mental health. Cool that you got to try it 30 years ago when it was relatively unknown in the US. The amount of information out there nowadays is insane.

A judoka from a really good club turned me onto a couple of Brazilians who were giving a weekend seminar/workout in town . In between the time I signed up, and the time the weekend took place, UFC 1 took place. The guys were Rorion and Royce Gracie. At that time, they were very nice guys who were all about technique over power. They even had a small women with them who would demonstrate a lot of the techniques.
The other guy that I took classes from on a regular basis was only a Blue belt in BJJ, but was also a Muay Thai Champion and was no joke. Even back then, he had the cauliflower ears and scar tissue that speaks to a lot of hard training and fighting, but he was more about technique than brute force. Still a vg, respectful guy, who was training with Carlson Gracie. I found out just a little while ago that he finally got his Black belt- after 20 years!

I liked the stuff that I did at the time, but it had next to zero groundfighting. The BJJ, and Aikido that I did before that, really helped in that area. The Aikido was great for learning how to fall. Another great teacher!

There are some real whackos in martial arts, but I have been very lucky with the people I have trained with. All different, but all excellent, and good people.

That is an awesome story to have trained with Rorion and Royce. I go back and rewatch some of the earlier UFCs just to appreciate how far it has come, and what the Gracies meant. Did you ever meet Rickson?

Sounds like you have had some great experiences - that is awesome.

I am lucky to have found a good gym, mostly with 30-40 year old guys that aren't trying to win IBJJF or ADCCs. I have stopped in 3 or 4 other gyms (one in Minnesota - which was fantastic) and one had that "just be tough and win at all costs" mentality. Thankfully that is not how it is where I train, since I probably would not have stuck with it. As you know, the first 6 months to a year is the huge attrition time, since almost everyone, barring former wrestlers/judokas/grapplers, or D1 athletes, gets demolished over and over again. Had I been in a room of "win at all costs" guys, I'd probably have lasted up until my first injury.

I am a little over a year into Blue - guessing it will be a few more years until purple. I have to reframe how I look at it since I can get a bit obsessive, or have to set goals...I will now have to set different types of goals as my physical abilities start to lessen more than they already have. (Whenever I go against an 18-22 year old, it is a always an easy reminder of how things change, haha).

No, Rickson was in Japan, i think? Nobody really knew about the Gracie's then in North America, except for the serious grapplers.

Rocky 1 may be one of my favorite movies ever made. Leaving Netflix soon so it was due for a rewatch. I love it. I love the underdog story, Carl Weathers is great, I love the gritty Philly background, just a great movie
