TONIGHT’S GAME- The Bruins host the Capitals tonight in the third of three games between these teams this season and Washington’s second and final visit to TD Garden this year ... The Bruins are 30-35-9 overall this season with a 19-12-6 record on home ice.- The Bruins open April with the Capitals tonight ... They will next play their final set of three games in four nights , playing in Montreal on Apr. 3, returning home to host Carolina on Apr. 5 and playing in Buffalo on Apr. 6

MILESTONES APPROACHING- Jeremy Swayman is one win shy of his 100th NHL win.- Henri Jokiharju is one game shy of his 400th NHL game.- Elias Lindholm is five points short of his 600th NHL point.- Henri Jokiharju is six points short of his 100th NHL point.

INJURIES- Hampus Lindholm: Lower body (LTIR)- Charlie McAvoy: Upper body (LTIR)- Mark Kastelic: Upper body

BOSTON vs. DETROIT, LIFETIME SERIES- The Bruins and Red Wings are meeting for the 621st time in their histories with a 260-260-9-5 lifetime record with Boston holding a 1,892-1,847 scoring edge in those 620 contests.- The Bruins are 89-165 52-3 lifetime in Detroit with the Red Wings having a 1,030-793 scoring advantage in those 309 games.- The Bruins have won the first two games of this season’s series with a 2-1 win in Detroit on Nov. 23 and a 3-2/OT win in Boston on Dec. 3.

This tank is the best thing the Bruins have done all season (low bar admittedly). Two weeks ago I had thought pick 6 was a fair if ambitious aim, but as high as 4 and a reasonable lottery chance now seems quite possible.

Hope the Bs at least put in a good effort for the home fans here. The Caps have been seriously impressive this year and I expect them to bounce back after a loss last game. We will see if Boston can at least hang with them. If Ovi can pot a couple it will go a long way towards helping him clinch the goal record before this season ends.

It is ironic that the Bruins usually have the most brutal schedule in March and April, leading to the playoffs, play Washington on the last or second to last game resulting in an injury to a key player. This season, they have an easier schedule, play Washington earlier.....and it doesn't matter. Thank you, Hockey Gods.

I have never been a fan of Gretzky or Ovi, but it would be nice to have the record broken this season for an interesting hockey story.

No injuries please. Go Bruins!

Ovechkin is a dick.

Ed. Note: I still dislike Ovechkin's attitude and behavior relative to the incidents described in a subsequent post, and always will.

However, within the past few days I have read two profiles that paint a kinder picture 🖼️ of the man as he closes in on Gretzky's scoring record.

They reminded me why I liked Ovie for some time after he broke into the NHL twenty years ago.

So, perhaps it was unfair of me to dismiss a special player who will soon become the greatest goal 🥅 scorer in NHL history with a crude epitaph.

(At least for a good while. Many believed no one would ever challange Gordie Howe's scoring record. Ovechkin is on the verge of surpassing the once in a lifetime phenomena that finally did.

(Even so, sports records have a way of being broken by the *next* collaseus that inevitably comes along.)

Alexander Ovechkin deserves the accolades.

It's been a remarkable career.

I doff my chapeau,

🎩

To me he's just a human being with good and bad, same as most people. How you assess his personality is purely subjective, but his on-ice persona and conduct I don't really have a problem with - he's done a few dodgy things in his time but so have many others, overall I think he plays more or less the right way. Off ice I've seen him do some neat things with kids and charities. As an athlete his phenomenal ability is beyond doubt, whatever the limitations in his game. The political stuff is the big red flag and is obviously off limits here but I would simply say that while it's clearly problematic in his case, I try to be slow to judge, especially in cases where people have grown up in very different circumstances and places than my own.

More simply breaking the goal record will be an amazing feat that probably will not be repeated, at least in my lifetime, so I'll appreciate it for what it is.

Leaving the political to one side, my issue with Ovie is his problematic role as a leader.

It was Ovie who called Bruce Boudreau, within ear shot of everyone on the bench (including the head coach), a "fat f*ck."

It was also Captain Ovechkin who cursed out a rookie goaltender for making a game losing mistake before all present, not least television cameras and microphones.

Imagine Zdneo Chara doing that.

I can't.

An exceptionally talented and great hockey player.

Not certain about the human being.

He has made mistakes and done some things he should not have, for sure. As a captain, judging from people who played with him, some speak very highly, others have been more reticent, but I don't think any teammate, current or former, has ever openly trashed him.

I've seen better captains, but end of the day he's lifted the Cup wearing the 'C' and seems to have at least the respect of most in the league, so he's clearly a capable enough leader at the very least.

As a person, YMMV, as is the way of things.

I've got too many miles on me anyway,

As much as I am aware of the draft scenario and all that, my love for the Bruins goes deep.

It's like my soul doesn't allow me to root for a loss. I root for them to win every game and let the cards lay where they lay at the end of day.
Me too. I will NEVER cheer for the Bs to lose.
