The Flames had also traded away a bunch of picks in the first years they missed the playoffs:
2010 1st rounder: traded for Jokinen
2010 2nd rounder: traded for Bourque
2011 2nd rounder: traded for Stralman (turned into Saad)
2011 3rd rounder: traded for Staios
Then the next year they traded down in the 1st round to "recoup" the 2nd rounder they traded along with Regehr to get Butler and Byron. In the process they passed over Girgensons, Hertl, Teravainen, and Maata to select Jankowski and Sieloff.
Their outlook would look a lot less bleak if they had Schwartz (from 2010), Saad (from 2011), and one of Girgensons, Hertl, Teravainen, or Maatta already in their organization. Pretty much a complete comedy of errors that hopefully the Canucks will avoid.
I see what you're getting at, but their fortunes probably aren't significantly improved because it's unlikely they draft any of those guys, even if they had the picks.
Passed on Maata, twice.
Twice.
Canucks have more pieces to deal to prevent a long bottoming out, but, if the deadline was any indication, it seems like Vancouver has more in common with Calgary in terms of Ownership than they do management.
If you want to draw comparables, there was reportedly a deal on the table for Iginla in 2010 of 1st, Schenn, Simmonds. Sutter, 1st, Despres/whatever is a similar package.
The next season, Iginla really bottomed out.
Edit: More food for thought:
Canucks:
2010: 1st round pick, gabner, bernier for Ballard
2011: 3rd round pick, Oberg for Higgins
2011: 2012 3rd round pick for Lapierre
2011: 2nd round pick to 'recoupe' 2011 3rd, 4th
2012: 2 4ths for Pahlsson
Granted, the canucks got slightly more mileage from these transactions than Calgary got from theirs.
