SCOUTING REPORT

Pierre McGuire, former assistant coach with the Penguins ('91, '92), on the Leafs' struggles under Sheldon Keefe...

"This is where the numbers don't tell the story... they need more guys with the same kind of urgency... The problem is that doesn't always guarantee you wins because they don't understand the shutdown mechanism that you have to have in order to win with consistency. They don't have that right now."

Jim Rutherford, general manager of the Penguins, on why added a notable player ahead of the deadline...

"We had good players and got 100 points because we had enough talent to do that. But there just wasn’t that feeling about a team that was together... But this year, it’s a team, this group has come together... And we all feel good about this team.."

QUOTABLE
Pierre McGuire on what the Leafs can take away from the Penguins team that won the Cup in 2017...

Was Jarry first off the ice/been called the starter tonight? I'm actually surprised that Murray is not the starter tonight. Both played extremely well their last starts and myself I fully expected Murray to get the nod and don't think we go wrong either way.

Those lines are just weird and it’s idiotic to keep forcing McCann on L2 given its recent struggles, but I’m sure Sully will switch things up after the first few shifts.

Zucker-Crosby-Simon
Kahun-Malkin-Rust
Tanev-McCann-Hornqvist
Lafferty-Blueger-Aggozzino

I guess it’s a little harsh, but I can’t say I’m sad that ZAR is out week-to-week. That BART line had really lost its shine even as Tanev continued to play very well.

If they can play a solid forechecking game, the Leafs will fold. I think the new look 3rd line will pose mega problems for that d-corps. The Leafs really need these games though, so Jarry/Murr will need to stand tall early I’d presume.

My posts are jokes. And hockey is just a game.

The Leafs are in the top 5 teams that I love the Pens to beat...if just for the extensive whining by fans and stupid media questions after the game...

Leafs have a ton of fire power. If we don't play solid and with structure in the middle of the ice, it could be a bad night. We can't turn the puck over with regularity we have of late. Not against the Leafs. If we play a disciplined brand of hockey we should be ok.

I wonder if the Pens having a morning skate today will help them get off to a faster start tonight.

I've wondered all year if the Pens lack of morning skates have anything to do with the slow starts they usually have.

Perhaps slow starts but strong finish...hopefully they play their best hockey in the 3rd period despite the morning skate...

Nice GDT, BHD!

That d-corp for the Leafs...

...

Watch Anderson get a shutout tonight

I'm less worried about Toronto shutting the Pens out as I am Toronto having one of their offensive explosions.

They've looked "off" recently, but they're always a threat to put up 4+ goals on a team because of their skill up front.

Pens will get their chances, but keeping Toronto from getting theirs will be the bigger key.

This team has withstood so many great teams and beat most of all them (except your Tampa!!!). Now with a chance to take sole possesion of 1st against a tough team I expect them to rise to the challenge. Pumped for this one!!
