All teams expect to be a cup contender in the next 3 years or sooner.I'm expecting us to be a cup contender in 3yrs...and well, Veggie isn't going to be a starter on a cup contender and well, and who knows if Hrabal will be any good or even make NHL, and so a big question exists on finding a top 10 goalie
No.All teams expect to be a cup contender in the next 3 years or sooner.
Agreed, now tell me something I don’t know. Many goalies in the League are now capable of winning the Cup, it depends so much more on how the team is built and the style they play. That changed with the Cap. You only have so much money to spend and many teams don't see the value in paying a high priced goalie, spending that money on rest of lineup instead. Those teams are competing for the Cup almost every year and winning fairly regularly. You don't need to have great goalie or even the best goalie to win, you just need a goalie who doesnt lose games for you and plays above average for a month.
I think the prevailing sentiment is at what cost does doing so reduce a teams chances of raising the Cup.? IMO, it’s not currently wise to invest too much, or rely too strongly in any one given player.Adin Hill has been above .915 save pct twice (2023 the Year Vegas won was one of those years)...that is pretty good and the barometer for goalies.
I think Veggie is at .910 right now, so that is good, and if we had as good a team as Vegas it would be enough to compete, but we're not and so you gotta have a goalie with a save pct above .915
I'd never pay over $8M on a goalie...that being said, you can find 2 .910 or better goalies and with team improvement it should raise their level to .915.I think the prevailing sentiment is at what cost does doing so reduce a teams chances of raising the Cup.? The Bruins and the NYR are having not very good years. I think it runs deeper than just blaming the goalies.I'd never pay over $8M on a goalie...that being said, you can find 2 .910 or better goalies and with team improvement it should raise their level to .915.
I don't think you should spend a ton on goalie, just too much inconsistency year over year. Look at Swayman and Shesterkin.
No, you are correct and I'm not putting the entire blame on them. I'm just saying that I would never pay $8M or $10M for a goalieThe Bruins and the NYR are having not very good years. I think it runs deeper than just blaming the goalies.
When your goalie takes a bigger percentage of the Cap you expect more than just adequate from them. It's like McDavid playing ok all year and fans wondering why Oilers are not winning. The more money you take the more you need to carry a team. That's why most years the top teams are the ones who's best players took a little less. The Bruins and the NYR are having not very good years. I think it runs deeper than just blaming the goalies.
I agree, but I think you keep on seeing goalies getting paid more than years past. Most years you need above average goalie to win the SC. I don't see a team like Edmonton having a snowballs chance with Skinner in goal. Sure they came close last year but that is with having two of the worlds top five players. I'm not saying you need to do what the NYR did, but goalies are very important, and like you said, most years the top teams are the ones who's best players took a little less. I guess teams like Edmonton and the Leafs are in for more years not winning. When your goalie takes a bigger percentage of the Cap you expect more than just adequate from them. You need your goalie to play well but reality is for the last decade more average goalies have won the Cup than great goalies. Start listing the League's "best" goalies in your head and see how far you have to go to find a Cup winner after Vasilevsky. IMO Hill, Kuemper, Bennington, Murray, Holtby, Crawford, and such are roughly average goalies who put together a decent run to win Cups.I agree, but I think you keep on seeing goalies getting paid more than years past.
