Not better. Better coached
Better system. The second our dman does not connect on the pass to the forward on the wall, the puck is theirs again to restart another forecheck that hems us in. That initial pass is critical against the Isles. You don't execute that first pass, you're f***ed against them

This team is pathetic and soft...just like their coach.....waiting for more excuses from the Quinn Defenders.
It’s just a philosophical thing. I agree they’re soft. But I blame the players and to an extent, the GM, though I think he would agree he still has work to do.
I just don’t see what the coach can reasonably do with these guys. They’re a talented, soft, finesse team. We know that. Sometimes they look great and sometimes they look...like this.

People will soon realize how important Lindgren is to this team. A guy that had to fight his way to a spot on this team. Doesn’t shy away from anyone and can play the game. Then again Boston drafted him so not shocked

not a playoff team maybe, but you still need to get playoff experience to progress, develop and become a playoff team/Cup contender.
They should get better as next year creeps along, but still not in playoffs. Their fight to get into the last spot won't be as urgent as this year (meaning they wont have to win 15 straight games AND hope that the teams ahead of them finish the year below .500), but there will be "fight" so in that regards it will be an improvement. But yeah, they will get their playoff experience when they make the playoffs. This is a long game, this rebuild. The first few playoffs they make they will not get very far.

If they don't make the playoffs AFTER next year...then abject failure and we will be creeping into Sabre territory. Dark ages turbo'd

I think at least making playoffs is almost a must next season. That is why I think keeping Quinn for any more seasons would be detrimental to the progress. Right now the team is good enough to attract almost any top coaches.

Lol so they're not trying? C'mon. The team on the other is simply the better team.

I don’t think they’re not trying, sorry if I gave that impression.

However, do I think Mika Zibanejad goes home after a bad loss and stews on it until the next game like someone like MacKinnon? I don’t.

Also, this isn’t Canada vs Austria in the WJC. It’s two teams that, as of 5 days ago, were separated by 4 points. They should not be getting shellacked the way they did in the first.

He wasn't a fringer 4th liner in 2019. He showed promise and brought energy.

Like new arrivals usually do.

At best I'll give you promise for a good 4th liner. The hands aren't there.

Whether coaching didn't develop him or he didn't progress is kinda Schroedinger's cat.

But ultimately I believe a player shapes his own destiny.

We've seen this same group play with alot more fight this year, It hasn't been there enough. All of the blame shouldn't go to coaching, but its definitely a part of it.

It's not lack of effort. It's stubbornness to go against their structure the same way game after game

They don't grow on trees but this team needs a ROR type. Maybe Laf turns into that kind of a leader?
We have plenty of skill.
They do have plenty of skill but they don't play a cohesive team game. Their puck support is brutal all over the ice, there's way too much room between their forwards and D in the NZ. All things we have gone over all season long and it doesn't seem there has been much improvement. They are terrible at puck retrieval all over the ice, routinely giving up inside positioning, content to let the opposing to skate all around the perimeter waving their sticks around refusing to engage physically. I get Trouba is out, Hajek isn't an NHL player, Jones is a neophyte, Miller is a rookie etc. But these things seem to be structural, not just a product of their youth. Maybe it is but I guess we won't know until for a while.

I hope they make it! But I don't expect it, and won't be salty. The future core will all be super young when they start making the playoffs anyway.

He’s back next year. No team would take him in the past and certainly not now

They wouldn't take him for what JG wanted in return. By all reports he was very passively shopped, if you could even call it that.

the defense we have dressed makes this virtually unwinnable. missing lindgren and trouba takes away the 2 most physical guys, 2 of your top 4, and you have a pairing of two rookies - both small and non-physical players. on that alone we were in for it.

but the forwards were mostly horrific...once again stromes line just horrific. i don't think they crossed the red line. he is a disaster in these games. panarins 2 on 1 was with mika/buch.

the only really good was the filthy pass from laf to buch who can't finish anything tonight. other than that barron looks comfortable / solid. gauthier was very noticeable. my biggest gripe with quinn is how we've handled him. he may be a liability defensively and prone to penalties, but he's got a very unique skillset and when he's playing well he's a wrecking ball. i don't mind him having him sit after bad games, but he should be getting back in over a rooney or howden...they may be more consistent but that consistency is doing absolutely nothing. they don't need to play every night thats for sure.

They have to work for every inch of ice vs the Isles and they refuse to do it. This is the same ghost act they pulled vs the Canes because they didn't want to work.

Every and I mean every islander forward is backchecking and hounding the puck carrier. Isles get the puck and no one is within feet of the puck carrier.
We definitely could use a couple dogs like the Isles have. I think we’ll get there but right now it’s pretty frustrating to watch.
We’re good at the more open games but this is a great reminder to the FO that we need some more dogs.
