It's an easy out to blame the coach, who has publicly called east-west hockey "a flu on the team." The greatest coach in the world can come in preaching structure and fail with this bunch. And honestly, it's because of Panarin. Yeah, he's great, no denying that, but no coach is going to tell a 12M/yr superstar to play a style that's not his. Then the rest of the team becomes enamored playing that way too. Then, you've got Zibanejad and Kreider, who are never going to win awards for grinding.

Right, the coach certainly can take some blame. But, this perticular game is not a good example.

How is a young puck possesing transitional team going to fair against an experienced defensive team?

Was Quinn all of a sudden going to turn them into a hard nosed forechecking team in two days?

Have they ever displayed any of that this season outside of maybe Kakko or Kratsov(who are still developing kids)?

That's 15 right there that Zibanejad doesn't even have a case against. 16 if you count Draisaitl who is a part-time center. Then there are a few more that could be debated.

We've convinced ourselves he's a franchise center because that's what we want. He's still in the lower end of 1C's which is what he always was. And games like these make me think a play-driving center is what's missing. Not necessarily a franchise center because that's hard to find, but a matchup center who carries play at even strength. All of our centers are bad at doing the things centers do. That's not entirely on Zibanejad but we might need his cap space to add that player.

Zibanejad is better than Coutorier, ROR, Tavares and Kopitar for sure. Probably better than Bergeron and Point as well, and on his day better than Barkov and Bäckström.

Lundqvist is a first ballot hall of famer. Adjust your expectations for all future Rangers goalies, because there are no Lundqvists to be had by free agency, trade or draft unless you get very very lucky.

I strongly disagree. The RANGERS always have great goalies outside of a few short years. If we are good at one thing.... it’s goalies.

I’m not really sure what identity we’d have with a different coach either. We have skill players who struggle against top teams, young kids, and a handful of AAAA players we are counting on to continuously overachieve.

This team is what happens when you just acquire talent without regard for fit or style. Sometimes the cake ends up not quite as appetizing as you thought before you put it in the oven.
