I was watching the Flyers tonight when out of the blue Jim Jackson and Boucher announced the trade. Maybe I haven't been paying attention, but it caught me completely off guard. Was surprised to hear the names involved.

The B's did catch a break missing Rantanen, but will Necas make it? He obviously won't have a chance to practice, but he's a guy who could be put right in.

As far as I'm aware there were no rumors at all around this one. Completely came out of nowhere. I was the similar to you - was watching Stars-Knights (terrific game BTW) when ESPN suddenly announced it.

So the Bruins get a partially distracted Avs, but I don't know whether that helps or not. If the contract talks with Mikko were as unproductive as it sounds, perhaps this will at least not come as a total shock to the rest of the playing group. Boston themselves need to ignore the noise and just get out there and play good hockey. They're so unpredictable at the moment but their home form has been pretty good so hopefully that continues here.

Yup, this one came out of left field.

The only indication we had something was amiss that it was fairly well known negotiations between Rantanen and the Avs on a new deal were not going well.

But even though, the assumption was they'd eventually figure it out given how important Rantanen is to that team. And yet...

Rantanen apparently has the agent as Draisatl and wanted the same money. Good luck with that.
Carolina will likely oblige him. I don't think they pull the trigger on a deal without having a fairly good idea they can lock him up.

And if they don't, someone in free agency will.

14+ million is nuts for a winger but Rantanen has the track record to justify it.

We do catch a depleted team, but teams tend to play a bit over their head in this situation. Watch for Oconnor, I like that little speedster. I would go with Korpseasalo today and let Swayjerk recover.
I don’t think the odds are good that Korpisalo can repeat his performance from last game. I’d love to run with him for awhile but I go with Swayman today .

This is a real gamble on the Canes part. Looks like they are going for broke this season, much like 2022-23 Bruins. Don't see why Rantanen would sign now. Does he love North Carolina? Are the Canes really going to pay $14 mil a year for him? Hall's also a UFA, as well as Orlov, Burns and Andersen.

I think the Hurricanes are going to give Rantanen what he’s asking for.
