One of MOC's biggest failure's was not finding a #1 dman after RB77 was traded out of town. The guys they tried as top pairings just never panned out: Jon Girard got into the car accident that ended his promising young career, Brian Berard needed GPS to find his way back to defend in his own end, they couldn't resign Sergei Gonchar, Nick Boynton never progressed beyond a decent 2nd pairing guy, Dan McGillis wasn't good enough, Brian Leetch was too old, Brad Stuart couldn't build on his one good year. For a franchise that has a history from generation to generation of having some of the very best bluelines in hockey, it was a big black mark on MOC's legacy, at least with the local folks.
