DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings will be missing their best player Sunday when they visit the Buffalo Sabres, as Pavel Datsyuk didn’t make the trip due to a possible concussion.

Datsyuk was elbowed in the jaw by defenseman Jared Cowen with 7:48 remaining in the Ottawa Senators’ 4-2 victory Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.

Datsyuk was shaken up momentarily but got up and played three more shifts. His last shift, however, lasted only 12 seconds, and he did not play in the final 1:51.

“We left him behind,’’ general manager Ken Holland told MLive.com. “After the game he felt, I don’t know the word, but he wasn’t quite right. We’re going through the protocol, see how he feels in the next day or two.’’

Holland said Datsyuk felt “fuzzy,’’ not normal.

We're now 6th in the conference. Weren't we like 3rd a week ago?

We've lost 8 of our past 10 games. If we lose this game, Holland needs to get on the phone and stay on it until he can figure out a way to upgrade this squad. He's had more than a decade of easy sailing with this team - its time he had a real homework assignment.

Holland will trade a #1 draft pick for a 6th defensemen. He can't trade a roster player.

Lol 3rd game in 4 days. Old dead weight team. Only plus is gustavsson is playing because howard ****ing sucks this year. Sabres 4-3. Daniel cleary better not even see pk time with #13 let alone any other time with dats.

improve the team? you mean like acquiring three top six forwards that we didn't have when we lost most of those games?

sounds like quite the improvement to me especially considering most of those losses were OT/Shootout losses

Going to need some line other than Z's to step up and produce.

Well, I don't want to set unrealistic expectations given the roster, so I'll even settle for "line that is semi-consistently dangerous in the offensive zone and puts some sort of pressure on Buffalo's D." Don't want to set the bar too high.

Yes. They were never on LTIR.

The only positive I take from him missing tomorrow is that I don't have to watch Cleary play with Datsyuk.

Actually looking at ice time it wasn't that much. Tatar got almost 40%.
