Here's my take: The Avs started to get high off their own farts after three wins in a row and everyone coming back from injury. In their mind they were "back". They probably celebrated at bit on their day off. Then Drouin is out of the lineup and the lines that had been starting to click are suddenly discombobulated. Meanwhile, Tampa is heavily motivated and ready to go. Then Annunen, in his 25th career game, plays poorly.

That's it. That's the takeaway. The sky isn't falling. Hopefully this knocks some sense into them and they get back to work.
Woah.

Step back from up to the ledge.

Yes. It was.

Toews covered that perfectly. He prevented the cross-ice pass which is what you have to do, and in fact managed to angle the shooter off a little so that there was no chance of a shot up the middle. So it wasn't a necessarily a bad-angled shot, but it was far from ideal.

Georgiev was given a shot at an angle more advantageous to him than the shooter, unscreened and from a fair distance, and he had plenty of time to prepare for it. And he STILL managed to f*** it all up by deflecting a bad rebound right to Glendening. Why even bother preventing the pass when your goalie is going to give it to the other guy anyway!?!?!

And this is why I think the Avs defenders play 2-on-1s wrong all the time. Usually you just have to let the guy take, which I know defensemen hate doing in the first place no matter who the goalie is, but the Avs more than usual try a desperation play to block the pass AND take out the shooter, which almost never works, because they don't trust Georgiev to make the save.

So yeah, not blaming Toews one bit for that one. Blame the lackluster power play for sure for making a dumb turnover, but that goal is 99% on Georgiev and his horseshit rebound control. I am so done with these goalies.
We can agree to disagree. George made mistakes on the play. And so did Devan. Bottom line, the puck ended up in the Avs net. And everyone on the ice is responsible for that. EVERYONE.

Close, tie up Glendaring makes it less likely that he is the beneficiary of an unobstructed open net.

I've admitted I would play and coach it different.

Toews can’t cover the shooter AND Glendening at the same time. Trying to close on him is precisely not the way to play a 2-on-1 at the NHL level. Toews did exactly what he was supposed to do, Georgiev did not.

I don't know what is more troubling. Toews play this season. Or the fact that this is the first of a seven year deal.

Age well, this one will not.

They had other options to go in a different direction last year, after seeing the way Toews has played post Cup, and his age, but chose to go down this road instead.

Similar with Girard, now they don't have much choice but to keep going down this road.

I've been worried for a while now they've gone back to having a deficient D core they try and fail to fix with cheap deadline deals every year, because they don't have the cap space, or the assets to properly fix it. A top heavy D core that has issues defending is what prevented them from winning in the past.

Also what ended their season in the 2nd round last year, even with the 2C people thought would be the answer playing well.
