After Quentin Miller who went from a QMJHL 10th round pick in his second year of eligibility to a 4th round pick of the Montreal Canadiens, Quebec might have another interesting prospect coming between the pipes, Louis-Antoine Denault. He showed up to camp as a free agent and he beat 4 QMJHL draft picks for the backup job.

Being a 6'7 goalie, covering so much space and moving as fast as he does with his pads, he will probably get attention from scouts.

Has also has an interesting story. He was 5'10 when the pandemic started in 2020. When hockey restarted in 2021 he was 6'3 and the difference in height was tough for him to adjust to at first but his progression in the past 18 months has been impressive.

He just had a great month of January with a 1.83 GAA and a 0.934 SAV% with one of the worst team in the QMJHL. He's on the Team of the week despite a loss against Baie-Comeau.

His development has been impressive since September and he isn't draft eligible until 2025.

That save during an OT last season was great. I like the patience because many goalies would have chose to slide on the right after the second pass.

Bigger goalies are only worth it if they have the statistical profile. I don’t buy the line of thinking that they could teach some 7’0 230 guy who has no talent for the position to stop the puck because he’s big.

I’m sure he’ll be drafted, regardless, but he needs to up his SV% 15 points or more to be a serious threat to be a top 5 goalie drafted for 2025.

His first 13 games last season (before the end of the trade period):

2-8
4.17 GAA
0.867 SV%

His last 16 games (after the end of the trade period, Quebec had traded away its top 5 players):

5-8
3.24 GAA
0.896 SV%

Scouts are actually watching games and not just the SV% of a goalie who's playing on the worst team in the league. He actually did well last season. Scouts also like players with an interesting progression, which Denault does have.

He came to Quebec's camp last year as an undrafted free agent out of a third tier league in his age group. He didn't have the training of a junior hockey player. He made the team after doing well in camp and the goalie coach saw his potential. He improved a lot over the past season and he worked all summer with the goalie coach. It'll be interesting to see the impact of his work this season.

Yeah, I see what you’re saying. Sounds like he’s on an upward trajectory, but will have to show that this year with performing well.

My point is basically that the size is a bonus but it won’t matter what height he is if he can’t stop the pick and it shouldn’t be viewed as anything more than a bonus. It can’t be the main selling point of why to take a player high in the draft.

He’ll be their #1 this year. I doubt they’ll be much better but at the same time he’ll see a lot of pucks which isn’t a bad thing for his development.
