G Harrison Meneghin - Medicine Hat Tigers, WHL (2024, 206th, TBL)

It's been a real tale of two seasons for Harrison Meneghin. In his first 11 games of the season he had a 14.23 GSAA and 0.818 QS%, just ridiculous numbers. His next 11 games he's posted a 0.433 GSAA and a 0.364 QS%. He's had some big games to make his GSAA/SV% look good but there's been a lot of games where he hasn't been good just not disastrous enough to tank his numbers. Meneghin is a good goalie who had a great start and has come down to earth because the way he plays is not sustainable for success. He's really relies on his agility and size. He's not bad at most of the other aspects of the game except in the one that really hurts him when considering the elite talent waiting for him at the WJC's and in the pro's, he either struggles to read the play or he just finds it easier to react to plays. Wouldn't be the biggest problem if he had elite agility. Unfortunately he's just got good agility which makes him tough to beat in the CHL but when it comes to the WJC's Canada needs a guy that can hold his edges while reading the play. Garand, Milic, and Levi were all like this. That's why personally I'd go with Bjarnason, Ratzlaff, and Leenders as the guys I'd pick for the team. They have the skillset's needed to handle the type of workload awaiting for a Canadian goalie at the WJC's.

Ratzlaff and Leenders are no good. They're no good this season and I don't think they have upside either.
Bjarnason is promising but him and D'Aigle really shit the bed at the WJC18. I'd give him another chance but maybe not as a starter.
I haven't watched all games of Meneghin this season but many of them. The 2nd Ziemmer goal last game was probably the 1st goal he let in that he potentially could have saved if he didn't get caught in nowhereleand. Other than that he's been perfect. You don't usually see CHL goalies being this consistent under such a heavy workload. Again, the guy played many back to backs, even on the road. The last I recall playing a similar season was Luke Cavallin but he did so in his overage season. No other Canadian goalie has been similarly dominant this season. The closest are fellow WHLers Lukas Matucha and Jan Spunar but they're both Czechs, not Canadian.

As I said, the only knock on Meneghin I noticed is that his rebound control is inconsistent.

If you'd like to expand on your Ratzlaff and Leenders takes that'd be appreciated. Leenders has a higher GSAA/30 and QS% than Meneghin. Ratzlaff has a higher QS% than Meneghin despite being on a worse team. I take it you didn't read just how much Meneghin has been struggling in his past 11 games either. Really weird to say that Bjarnason shit the bed at the U18's when the score was 2-2 in the semi-final before he had to leave due to a concussion and Canada couldn't score a single goal on the five minute PP. If you care about consistency and numbers isn't Meneghin's recent 11 game stretch of only having 4/11 games of an over league average SV% be concerning? Did you have this same passion for Nathan Darveau being on the WJC last season because that was a truly dominant season: 50 starts, 0.860 QS%, 57.225 GSAA, 1.056 GSAA/30.

Part of the reason his rebound control is inconsistent is because he's not reading the play and instead he's reacting a lot. This leads to not being able to get set properly which in turn makes it more difficult to control rebounds. Meneghin is not fast enough to rely on his reactions to be successful at the WJC's on a Team Canada that isn't going to be able to just dominate teams to victory.

I'm not a big numbers guy. I don't have the time to look up advanced stats and I honestly don't care much either. It's useful information for sure but never a complete picture without background information. What I can say is that the goalies you mentioned are rather small and not very good athletes which is always concerning. Meneghin is a much better athlete despite being bigger. I also watch quite a bit of CHL these days and they are not playing well at club level while Meneghin does. Meneghin is easily the most dominant CHL goalie this season though I have to say that Jan Spunar is impressive as well. Meneghin played 22 games though and finished all 22 of them, including many back to backs, even on the road. That's something no stats are gonna take into account. Meneghin has been incredibly consistent despite a heavy workload. Again, him hesitating on the Ziemmer breakaway was the first "soft" goal I've seen him give up all season long.
You might even be right regarding the reason for Meneghin's incosistent rebound control. Can't really fault him for it though. He's playing a lot of games and it's much easier to track the puck if you're fresh compared to when you're tired. I don't know what you mean with "struggling the last 11 games" though. Did you actually watch the games or are you just looking up numbers? Lethbridge was down 5-7 regulars pretty much all November long. They had to loan young guys, play defensemen upfront and sometimes still couldn't ice a full lineup. It was only on the recent BC road trip that they got a few guys back. I watched all of those 11 games, minus a few periods maybe, and Meneghin didn't give up soft goals at all. Quite the opposite is the case. His numbers were always gonna take a hit with the team in front of him missing so many guys. Among others, they were down their top winger and top center so of course that was gonna hurt the team. Meneghin played well though. Brady Smith played one single game all month long. You think an experienced head coach like Bill Peters would ride a goalie like that if he wasn't playing well?

I like Bjarnason as a prospect with lots of upside but he did not have a good WJC18 and he is inconstent at best at club level as well. He's much less of a finished/polished product than Harrison Meneghin.

In any way, it's a useless discussion. If you look at the Management group making those decisions, you know Meneghin is gonna be on the roster...if you like it or not. Whether he's gonna be the starter or not remains to be seen. From a strictly neutral point (I'm not Canadian) I think he should.

If you're watching Ratzlaff/Leenders and coming to the conclusion they're not as agile as Meneghin then we're just clearly completely disagreeing on the three of them as goalies. Best example of Ratzlaff's reflexes and agility is the CHL Top Prospects game where he went 1v1 multiple times with Connor Bedard's famous release and stopped him every single time. Bjarnason had a fine U18's that was tainted from the big 8-0 loss to start it off. Be weird if I wasn't watching games and started commenting on his ability to read the play, his level of agile movement, etc. Yes I've watched him. I watch a lot of goalies and I know what it takes to succeed at the WJC's. As soon as Devon Levi was drafted I said he was my favourite to be the WJC starter and voila he is. Prior to the start of WJC camp last year I said that Thomas Milic should be the starter and he was putting up a great performance. I didn't make a 2022 prediction because Garand was the easy pick.

It's not about letting up your version of soft goals. It's about can Meneghin's playstyle translate to the WJC's and I don't think he can. As stated before he relies a lot on his reactions and agility to make saves. He just doesn't read the play well enough or doesn't want to read the play for the WJC's. He's also just not agile enough to rely on his quickness to keep up at the WJC's. Look at Sebastian Cossa, bigger and quicker but struggled in reading the play so Canada went with the smaller goalie who was more reliable in Dylan Garand. When's the last time a management group took the goalie from their junior team?

Shockingly didn't get invited to Canada's WJC20 camp but he now appears to be injured anyway. Didn't come out for the 3rd period yesterday, then didn't even make the lineup card today.

Completely unrelated but im pretty sure I went to Highschool with his Sister. So im curious if he will get an NHL contract

Steal. So ice cold and consistent. Highly mobile and fairly big. Should have been drafted last year already. Goalies are voodoo and tough to predict but I can see this kid making it to the NHL. Certainly a good lottery ticket to have.
