Silovs has to be considered as one of the top goalie prospects in the World.

He is currently backstopping Latvia into the Quarterfinals at the World Championships after going 5-2 in Round Robin with a .914 Save Percentage and 2.14 GAA. This is coming after an impressive debut for Latvia at Worlds last year with an eye popping .952 Save Percentage and 1.22 GAA in 4 games.

Silovs just completed his first full season in the AHL. Playing in 44 games for the Abbotsford Canucks. He had a 26-12-5 record
while having .909 Save Percentage and 2.44 GAA

Silovs also appeared in 5 games for the big club this year in Vancouver. He went 3-2 with .908 Save Percentage with 2.75 GAA

Ian Clark , Canucks guru Goaltending Coach was a big advocator in drafting Silovs. He may have found himself his next protege to add to his long list of students which includes: Luongo, Bobrovsky, Markstrom, Demko,

A sixth round draft pick in 2019. Would be huge if he hit for Vancouver. A possible back up for Demko in the upcoming year?

He will definitely fight for the backup spot but ultimately the Canucks have to decide whats best for his development. 20 or so games in Vancouver or be the workhorse in Abbotsford and get 50+ games.

Spencer Martin is still under contract and can back-up Demko this season if needed.

Demko is under-contract for 3 more years. Canucks might have a huge chip they can trade, whether its Demko or Silovs when the time comes to make a decision.

With the Farm team in Abbotsford, I could see Silovs getting 10 starts in the NHL while playing most games in the AHL.

If he continues to develop, his timeline and age line up perfectly to take over as starter when Demko's deal is up. I'd be worried about signing Demko to a Markstrom type deal once his expires, he has not been as durable as you'd like to see.

Silovs trajectory is kind of amazing:

2019 drafted

2019-20: splits the starting job with the Barrie Colts (36 games)

2020-21: 1 game in total all season. He’s very clearly behind Rick Dipietro as the Canucks best goaltending prospect.

2021-22: 20 games in total (10 of which were in the ECHL)

2022-23: Becomes a well regarded goalie prospect.

Everyone was all over the Canucks for ‘ruining’ Dipietro by playing him so little during the Covid season.
Silovs only played 1 game all season that year and also NEVER got to work with Ian Clark like Dipietro did all year.

But, one guy turns himself into a well regarded NHL goalie prospect, while 2 years later the other guy played all season in the ECHL, still somehow unable to recover from the exact same circumstances.

Sorry Vancouver, from now on he's busy being the Minister of Defence for Latvia

Realize you're alluding to Michael DiPietro and not the 41-year-old former USA goalie that is now on the radio in New York City, but while Silovs' tournament was impressive it's a stretch to call him a sure thing - even in the Canucks' organization.

His AHL numbers as a 22-year-old were impressive yet in the playoffs Abbottsford still went with minor league veteran Spencer Martin in the majority of their games.

Though admittedly, unless the recently-signed Belarusian goalie Mikita Talapila turns out to be better than expected, the Canucks don't seem to have much depth behind starter Thatcher Demko.

I don't think referring to Silovs as a "well regarded goalie prospect" (twice) is the same thing as calling him a "sure thing", at all.

Silovs' WC performance, and the Latvian win, was a great story. Nice moment to celebrate the kid's progress. "Positive Vibes", right?

Also, you spelled Abbotsford wrong, and who is Mikita Talipila? Maybe you're "alluding" to Nikita Tolopilo?

Damn, I’m old...when I think of ‘goalie’ and ‘Dipietro’, I still can’t help but default to Rick instead of Michael.

I wonder if being a DiPietro ever got into Michael's head. They aren't related but in terms of cursed hockey names that has to be up near the top.

The first name is the transliteration of his Belarusian name, the second is the Russian version. It's the same person.

I get it. I actually learned something about the Belarusian vs. Russian language. Belarusian is closer to other regional languages, over Russian. I stand corrected.

My points about you changing the description around Silovs and the overall dour tone of your post, at a pretty cool hockey moment, still stand.

Realize in re-reading my post it comes across as negative in tone and sleighting the accomplishments of Silovs at the WC - that is on me.

Didn't mean to denigrate his play nor his potential.

Was Morea reference to the level of play at the tournament; as well as the uncertain nature of the goaltending position in general.

I follow the Devils as an example. Prior to this season Nico Daws - and not Akira Schmid- was considered the goaltender of the future for the organization. (In fact, going back a few years (and injuries) ago, Mackenzie Blackwood was considered a candidate to be the eventual goalie for Team Canada; an idea that doesn't seem likely at the current moment).

Again, sorry for not being more clear.
