I'm getting nervous about the Rangers likely future the next 5 to 7 years. If Hart has solved the Flyer goaltender issues they are going to be a very good team. And they have better prospects/young roster talent overall than we do.

Similarly the Islanders are apparently good now and have an overall better prospects/young roster talent also. They even have a goalie prospect (Sorokin) roughly on par with Shestyorkin.

We really need another successful trade deadline haul if we are going to keep up. There is a real possibility that we are looking at mediocrity for a number of years going forward.

We're in year 1 of our rebuild. We've drafted 5 times in the 1st round over the last two drafts. In addition to those picks, Gorton has acquired Howden(1st round), Hajek (2nd round), Lindgren (2nd round), and Rykov who was one of the Devils best defensive prospects.

There will be more players moving out for futures from now and the deadline. The future isn't bleak. It's bright. We just need to be patient and see it through. It won't be 5-7 years long though.

I plan on freezing myself to be thawed by the eventual alien anthropologists who show up.

only to be completely thawed and unable to be refrozen again when you learn that our "rebuild" isnt complete and jack hughes was just traded for a bunch of mid 1sts....

You win the "Way too early overreaction" thread of the week. Also it's way too early to make that judgement on Hart. It takes the league a bit to figure out rookie goalies. Not uncommon to see a rookie tender light it up for 30-40 starts and then get exposed. He's good but let's see how he adapts once they figure out his tendencies.

Don't we already have a roster building thread for this level of negativity... and a prospects thread, coaches thread, GM thread blah blah blah blah

Also I guess if i wanted to be really depressed I could go the main boards and propose a Zbad for X and hear all about how "he's a solid #3 center but not worth our 6th best prospect"

Yeah in what world is Mika worth a top 10 prospect?

Nothing can happen

The Islanders are good now because they drafted a legitimate elite center.

That's why we're doing this.

I mean... it's a possbility, sure.

There's a reason why some teams have been bad for a really long time. It's because their rebuilds weren't successful. We aren't going to know for a few years though, so I'm not stressing about it now.

You worry about yourself, not about others. The future will be bleak if Gorts decides that it's more important to try to make the playoffs this year than to get assets for Hayes and Zuccarello, and then next year for Kreider and Names.

Also, I get how you would begin the rebuilding with a safe prospect (Lias) who is guaranteed to make it, but won't be anything special because you need to fill up the cupboard with at least something. But we have some assets now: Zib, Butcher, Chytil, Lias, Howden Strome, Vesey, Fast are 8 forwards who will all play long-term in the NHL. Kravtsov, Vinni, etc may also make it. On defense we have Skjei, Pionk, ADA, the 3 Ds acquired at the deadline, K'Andre, Lundkvist. We have more than enough quantity, but only a few guys who could possibly play on the first line/pair (Chytil, Kravsov, K'Andre) and none who are guaranteed anything.

We need high-risk, high-return guys. If the team wants to make sure it adds a rookie every year, then add a prospect along with a first for MZA and Hayes. If they trade MZA and Hayes for a first, the team will have 5 picks in the first 2 rounds. Use them on guys like Chytil and Christian Thomas. Most will not work out, but one first liner is better than 5 guys named Sundstrom, Malhotra, Korpikoski, Lindberg and Lias combined.
