You don't have to like it but rules are rules ace.

Bunting is a rookie, and a pretty good one apparently.
My point was not all rookies are made equal, and that his age should factor in heavily when compared to the guys that are 5 years younger. I'm glad you like the rules, but I can still point out that they are silly.

Phenomenal game all around, dominated them from start to end. Matthews/Marner are absolutely stomping the opposition.

Not trolling but Severson is one of the worst d-men I've ever seen. This guy is like Gardiner/Barrie horrific defensively. It's crazy that he was apparently this high end prospect at one point. The guy just can't play hockey for the life of him.

Anyways great way to head off to the all star break, no complaints from this fan. Soup looked strong and everyone played well. Need JT and Willy to get going but great job.

agreed Severson is in the no go zone and Gardiner is a good comparable as he get's turned around a lot and ends up out of the play

Manson is another guy that will disappoint should Kyle decide to spend any assets to acquire him, he'd be great on our bottom pair but he wouldn't be an upgrade over Justin Holl in the 4 spot. Just looking at basic comparables our guy who some of you love to hate, scores higher than Mr Manson in enough categories, and rates higher.

Compare Players - Frozen Tools

Scott Mayfield is a big strong a guy that can play on the bottom pairing and keep the blue paint bulldozed, he won't cost a ton in picks/prospects and may allow the Leafs to move an unwanted roster player or two.

There is also Giordano, I have no idea if he's available or if he'd even waive but it might be something Dubas should ask about

Quietest 5 game winning streak ever.

Kind of gets swallowed up in the big picture view of the Eastern playoff race.

ie. Last 10 games ..

Florida 7-3-0
Tampa 7-2-1
Toronto 7-2-1
Boston 6-3-1

Carolina 7-2-1
NYR 7-3-0

Leafs 5 game winning streak was almost required because of QofC and the results of the teams around them in the East race, as most of the playoff teams are playing at the same 10 game pace so If the Leafs wouldn't be doing this they would be losing ground.

If everyone is winning 7 of each 10 games then its not seen as some special achievement, and simply the expected norm of teams with Cup aspirations.

It's impressive because this was during our "slump"

Have to admit I was done after they went up 4-0 and was considering watching something else.
Love the easy, dominating win but it doesn't make for compelling viewing, for me anyways.
Exactly, was more than happy for the win, stoked that Matty and Marner kept rolling but the game wasn't very entertaining.

The end results might have been impressive but the means and play to achieve those certainly left some question marks and concerns.

When your starting goalie for example gets chased 10 minutes into a game giving up 3 goals on 7 shots then despite a 6-4 comeback win against one of the lowest scoring and weakest defensive teams playing their 4th or 5th string goalie.

Luckily Leafs are able to work out the kinks against non playoff teams like NJ and Detroit with also losing points in the standings in the process.

I prefer to have the trophy for the best rookie with no strings attached as opposed to the best rookie under 21.

That was point earlier before these 2 games, that I wouldn't be expecting a highly entertaining or competitive game with a pair of expected blowouts.

Monday at least because of the unexpected slow start and bad first the Leafs had to work for the win, while yesterday the minute it was 4-0 there wasn't much drama as to who was going to win only by how much..

I think we're a little spoiled particularly for those watching the NFL playoffs, and getting outstanding entertainment value for their sports fixes. IMO

Have you ever been happy?

New Jersey has beat some top teams this year. Any team can beat any team, we should be happy with the results, obviously the team could have played better.

They beat Carolina, Florida and Tampa. I haven't checked but I would bet they are the only team to have beaten all 3 this season.

NJ's goaltending is a tire fire. Glad we got the 2 points and got to the break relatively healthy. Last night's game was a "public skate" as Ferraro noted and NJ lost virtually every puck battle. You are not beating the Leafs if you allow them time and space. I would have preferred some push back from the Devils but so be it. The Canes on Monday should be much better test.

I distinctly recall the Leafs' power play imploding in the second half of the year. Not only was it not scoring but it gave up 5 of the total 7 short handed goals during this stretch. The unit continued this horrendous stretch into the playoffs and was a major contributor to the team losing to Montreal.

I agree as narrowing the field would just devalue the process for me. I think the age aspect is overstated too considering the older candidates aren't lapping their younger competition all that frequently.

Leaf fans would be much better off if they listened only to Ray and not the talking heads blathering on their radios all day.

What I really like about Ray us that he gives nice little insights into life as an NHLer without trying to aggrandize himself.

Beat them pretty good too.

Beat Florida 7-3
Beat the Canes 7-4
Beat Tampa 5-3

I didn't say I liked or disliked the rule.

Even some rookies the same age are not 'made equal'.

What would your solution be? Keep in mind that narrowing the criteria can make for a very small field of rookies and yield an inferior selection.

Michael Bunting is looking so good out there… I can see, years from now with the Bunting kids… Dad, tell us again about how you played top line with Auston and Mitch during your Rookie year… and won the Calder and the Cup.
