Freidman: don't expect Campbell to be back Leafs inital offer was 2.75 million per year

How about Jake Allen as a platoon option? Seems to fly under the radar as an option but he's been solid in Montreal, signed for under $3 million and signed for one more year. Does a rebuilder like Montreal care who is net? Would they give us Allen (with retention?) for Mrazek and a pick of some sort?

I wouldn't be opposed to something like that.

At the moment I suspect the Leafs will opt to go with a safer vet 1B (like Allen or a Reimer type) + a yet to be determined young guy who hasn't broken out yet and run a tandem.

The Leafs have close to 8 million to spend without moving any salary out, they have no major players that need contracts, not Jack Campbell is not a major player.

Now of course they are going to move salary every team does so that will free up money.

their entire core is locked up

they don't have a ton of money but they have enough to do what they need to do which is get a #1 goalie

Because we have 17 players signed and this includes Simmons,Nick A, Clifford a and Kallgren who are all at league min

So we basically have 11 mil and 14 players...

If Dubas allows Campbell to leave in free agency, he better have an idea on how to replace him.

The weirdo valuation of Mrazek last summer, the lack of obvious upgrade options on the market, and my impatience with seeing all our old players contribute to Edmonton's playoff run all have me feeling pretty antsy about a post-Campbell world.

InGoal Magazine was speculating maybe the Leafs had some analytical reason for choosing Mrazek, citing goalie play style and defensive environment compatibility. Turns out they were just doing their last minute Christmas shopping at the gas station.

They're going to be able to take Mrazek and a pick for taking on his salary

If they give us Allen with retention I can't even imagine what they'd ask for

They got a first for Chariot and toffoli they're not going to let us trade rape them

I wonder if this same analytical model couldn't separate goalie performance from team defense and suggested to run Feddy out of town.

He can't be a #1 we need a legitimate #2

he would be a fantastic backup though

I just looked at the UFA goalie list again. If there's a better UFA goalie than Campbell, I'm not seeing him. He's probably going to be the highest paid free agent goalie this summer.

Looks like he’ll be moving on then.

Is he the high priced goalie they’ll want to add?
I don't see why not (though I didn't get the vibe from Dubas's post-season press conference that Jack was a high priority). There aren't many available options that offer a clear upgrade for significantly cheaper (if cheaper at all). Jack is no sure thing, but he performed well enough here and seemed like a good fit. Still reasonably young and there is a case to be made he's just coming into his own.

I think they’ll need to go the trade route.
He’s 30, not that young. I imagine he’ll take the biggest deal he can find as it’s likely his last one.

To be fair Freddy was pretty fried because we ran him into the ground due to not having a backup for a year and a half
His highest starts were with Mac as a backup.

Fred's biggest issue was needing to play himself out of funks early and late in the season. Tough to rest a goalie who is rebuilding his confidence and struggling with the basics.

My point is that the way to have the best goalie would be to acquire the best goalie, and that would mean paying a crap ton.

If the leafs PP wasn't so inept, the would have won the series despite having the 2nd best goalie.

Tell me, which is the cheaper and easier problem to address?
Finding a #1D that can defend, eat minutes, and fix the PP is ideal and, like the goaltending situation, should have been addressed three to five years ago.

Jake Allen has worse career stats than Campbell, and worse stats in both of the last two years. St. Louis moved on from him because they didn't feel like they could win with him.

If the goal is to make the playoffs, but have virtually no chance at winning the Cup, then then I guess a career 1B/backup like Allen is the way to go.

Soup is moving on and I think that is best for everyone involved here 5 chances and you are out .. Mrzak will be bought out/LTIR'd if no one wants to trade for him .. we will have 1 new tender next year likely via trade and one of kids will be backup
If they can LTIR Mrazak, that’s a great option.

Freddy's issue is also that if he is not 100% he pulls the shoot. Heard this from Boudreau, and Kyper. O'Dog ripped him for not stepping up and Canes having to go with a 3rd stringer in game #7 vs Rangers. Said it was one of the the reasons the Leafs cut bait with him. I think it was Kyper who also told a story of the goalie coach coming up to Lou and telling him that Andy was not going back in for the 3rd in a game. Lou went down to the dressing room, and voila Andy was in there for the 3rd.

Dubas solved defence by adding multiple good defencemen rather than paying a ransom for that mystical 1D.

A point shot on the PP won't solve shit. The team's issue is net front presence. The team had a historically amazing PP when JVR and Kadri played that role.
