Samsonov is a good young goalie. If they run them 60/40, Hank is a good mentor and still capable. Plus, I think all the time off and getting bought out is a bit of a kick in the ass and we may see a slight “something to prove” improvement from him. Nothing close to vintage, but a solid platoon guy with Samsonov. Washington still has a good team. It’s a one year deal, one more kick at the can.

I said it to my buddies a week ago when the rumours of Hank going to the Caps started to make the rounds. And Uncle Larry also said it the other day in his column. We all should just be resigned to the fact that in Hank's first game back to MSG if there are fans of course, that he will get the "Eddie Eddie" treatment that Eddie Giacomin got back in 1975 when after he got traded to the Detroit, the Red Wings the next game I believe came into MSG and beat the Rangers and no Ranger fan gave a shit as it was all about Giacomin.

So yeah, pretty much etched in stone already that Hank will shut us out and none of us will care for that one nite. After that game tho...game on bitch!...lol

I'm not advocating it, but our 3 best dmen are Trouba, Fox and ADA. Moving ADA to the left balances things better and allows them to get appropriate amounts of ice time at 5 on 5. Will it work? I have no idea, but we need someone who can play with Trouba. We can't sign someone to a significant contract unless we move one of ADA or Strome, and signing a cheap LD might not solve the problem, so they may experiment with moving ADA to the left side. If it doesn't work, then we'll have to try something else.

Or maybe ADA gets traded for a center and Strome gets traded for a LD. We'll see.

Strome can play wing so if a center is brought then it's likely that either Strome or Buch could be in play. However, because Gorton waited so long before qualifying Strome I think the idea would be to not go after 2C / 3C and rather add a more depth defensive center (cheap).

Re. ADA - he will get his minutes on PP even if at even strength he's minutes would be less (in favor of Trouba and Fox). Like it or not but Smith could be looked to be Trouba's partner while potential LD AD partner spot would be filled with our own prospects and a cheaper LD, again more of a depth option. To me this is a more likely scenario for this offseason than ADA's trade or moving him to LD.

Both considerations are due to limited cap space.

I'm really wondering if they like Reuanen/Hajek/Miller/Robertson for one of those spots at a minimum. They still have Smith. I'd like it if they signed at least 1 more veteran LD but it's also possible Gorton has had a few conversations with other teams and a guy like Brayden McNabb

you mean like how he proved in the play in series that he isn’t very good anymore? If ever there was a chance to prove something that was it. And he was awful.

I’m just saying Hank has never even in his prime played well when sitting for a few days. I don’t know how that’s going to work now. But I’m glad. They’re in the division if he plays like I know he will that will only help us.

They still have significant work to do before they can fit AP. They have less than 3 mil in cap space and still need at least 1 more forward to replace Stastny. Unless they move Fleury's full cap hit, it will probably require more than 1 move to fit AP.

The advantage we have with regards to ADA is that we can take back equal or slightly more cap as part of the deal. That kills 2 birds with one stone for them, rather than having to make a separate deal and then signing AP. ADA will also be cheaper.

I think we will absolutely add a LD, if not more than 1. The question will be what caliber of player, and will it be from a trade or a UFA signing. There's no way we are going into the season with a left defense of Smith, Lindgren and then one of Hajek/Reunanen/Miller/Robertson.
