So after reading some of these posts on the bonuses, Rangers only have about $4MM in space after the RFAs are signed with 4 spots to fill and have operating room throughout the season.

Unless they find a taker for Smith or another trade I dont think they are signing any of the quality depth options out there.

Fast is getting older but for $2M they should have kept him as a veteran leader. The Rangers probably think they have enough vets but Fast is versatile enough to play up and down the lineup. Ideally he is a bottom 6 forward on your team with Kakko taking his place on that second line. Nothing but gratitude for him for everything he has done.

Everyone loves Quickie, but it also gives a new voice to take on a more prominent leadership role on the team. Fast isn't a core player, and I may be a bit old school here, but usually you want your core players being your leaders. Quickie did a great job of filling in for whatever that was asked of him. It's who he is, and why he's so well respected around the league.

I just became a passenger on the Granlund train. If Strome is expected to get say 4.33 + in arb, maybe we can get some kind of an asset and sign Gran for under 4?

After sleeping on it, here on my thoughts on Fast. There are a few possibilities as to what happened:

1) The Rangers offered Fast the same contract as he would ultimately sign with Carolina, but Fast wanted more from the Rangers
2) The Ranger offered a shorter deal with more money and Fast opted for more years.
3) Fast saw his spot with the Rangers are uncertain as prospects/younger players start moving into the lineup and he wasn't sure what it meant for him — then decided he was better off leaving for a contender.
4) Fast was insulted by the Rangers assuming they would get the chance to match any offer.
5) The Rangers were insulted that Fast, who reportedly wanted to stay, was shopping himself around then using other offers to negotiate.
5) Jeff Gorton and John Davidson are really bad at their jobs and their diabolical secret motive is to destroy this team from the inside.

Personally, I think some combination of the first 4 is the most likely case scenario.

It’s a combination of 4&5. Remember reports that Fast was looking for close to $4 and the Rangers were way lower. I think things broke down after that point - the Rangers didn’t make an official offer, Fast got offended and started looking elsewhere.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Kravtsov dedicated to the full KHL season. So he is automatically not going to earn certain bonuses assuming the NHL skates before the K concludes? Now, we don't know how the nhl factors certain common sense issues like this, but once we play a game Kravtsov's bonuses will start to dwindle.

He wanted 4M and ended up signing a contract for half that because he got tired of waiting?

Gotcha I just think they will get another LD like a Greene to pair w Trouba and if so they need Smith our. JJ should be a spare

Greene is not much of an improvement over Smith. Honestly, I think Smith did as well as we could have hoped for after he became Trouba’s partner. And again he’s overtaken by a youngster, he’s still useful from a roster / spare part(s) perspective.

I think it was initially reported that but then later came out he will come back one season starts.

Think NYR would have traded Fast at the trading deadline if they know that they would win 1. overall and getting the single 100% ready NHL player from this draft. Doubt they believed that we would go into the upcomming season with another player o a ELC with max bonuses

Beeing a scandinavian with background from similar kind of cities like Fast, Raleight seems like more of my kind of city to live in then NYC. Would love to visit NYC, but seems a bit daunting to live in.

I am sure its a mix of things, but I wouldn't rule out that one ingredience is that there is a little bad blood (in lack of a better word) between management and the former leaders.

And I have no problem whatsoever with that. A good leader group will very very rarely be a group that -- when it is done, past its expiration date -- acts perfectly and walks out the door with a smile on its face. Right? A leader group that was inclined to do that would rarely if ever be successful.

I am sure Fast wasn't super thrilled with how Hank was handled. I am sure there is some animosity between these guys and Phil Dunphy, er srry David Quinn. I am also sure a little lack of trust doesn't help when you are negotiating a new contract.

And at least for me, this moves the needle in relation to nothing. I wouldn't have expected anything else.

Agree with this but it’s worse: As it stands today, Smith is our 2LD next to Trouba unless Miller blows away camp.

Thanks, I didn't see any updates.

We also should remember that some bonuses will be mutually exclusive. No one will win MVP. Only one can win the Calder. There won't be an allstar game, and even if, only one could win the game mvp.

They can each still max out their possible bonuses, but the list is narrowed down before we even play a game. We can approach the cap by looking at some of those bonuses as being virtually impossible, and as long as those are allotted to the portion over the 7.5% cap we shouldn't have any overage into future seasons.

It hasn't been confirmed. You have a couple Russian reporters saying he has to stay, and you have people like Vince Mercogliano saying unequivocally the Rangers can bring him back whenever.

So let’s assume worst case scenario and Kravtsov, Miller and Barron make the team (because I would imagine Gorton doesn’t want to stone-wall one of them if they prove ready).

Guys like Khoderenko and Reunanen do not have those bonuses correct?

Khodorenko doesn't have bonuses, but Reunanen does.

Reunanen will count 941,667 against the cap.

The easiest way to calculate this stuff is to use CapFriendly's Armchair GM:

Armchair-GM - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Subtract 6.1125 mil from the total bonuses, then subtract the remainder from the cap space. That is how much space we actually have.

For some nothing beats the daily excitement of getting vent blasted by rat death smell on the sidewalk or someone exposing themselves on the subway. Theres also museums and shit.

The Rangers are stuck with Strome for now

Why would a team trade for him when they can sign someone in UFA that’s close to as good, for 50-75% of the price?

If he has a legitimate shot then it would be good to see him in training camp, or even fly over right now for rehab if that's how it works. But if he's healthy and going, and by all accounts he's a front line player in the second best league in the world, I think his team in Russia obviously would want him to play over there.

I learned a lot from Gag on the bonus cap thing. It’s fluid, when you play armchair GM and pencil in Kratvsov or Barron or Miller, fine all good but you have to add their bonuses too as a withholding amt. we won’t know that final number until we know who makes the team, having a 4.5-5 mil cushion on the cap for your planning purposes could be very reasonable.

Adding subway safari to my list of what to do when I finaly get to visit NYC. Heard the midnight trips to the local Walmart is the ideal way to see some of the rares species aswell, specialy if visiting Florida.

Unfortunately you’ll need a time machine to enjoy true danger voyeur tourism, in the mid/late 80s you could have a full trip just by trolling around Port Authority and Bryant Park. Now it’s Shakespeare summer stock and Times Sq is a theme park to Corp America. Does anyone remember Billy’s?
