I honestly don’t see Stu going over 9M even if he hits 100 points. Debrincat is likely going to be our highest paid player on his next year.

Its been a few hours now, come on PD you're slackin

Klingberg is an interesting case. He is arguably the best available defensemen in Free Agency but:

1. He's coming off two bad years. Teams aren't going to offer him the huge money (7MX7) they would have two seasons ago.
2. He's a Free Argent at the worst possible time. The flat cap is hurting the number of suitors available and also hurting the contract offers.
3. He's a 29 year old Free Agent (not 27 like some of the big long-term contracts we see to UFAs), so while he does have a chance that someone offers him a 7 year deal till the likely end of his career (36), it is unlikely to be a big money one due to the above reasons.

I think a 1-2 year contract might actually be a realistic option, it would give him the chance to rebuild his value. Teams would be willing to offer decent money because the term would be so reasonable and therefore the risk mitigated. Assuming he does well, he'd then become a Free Agent again when the cap is higher, teams have adjusted, and he's coming off a rebuilt reputation.

Example: Teams might only be offering him 7X5M currently to account for the risks and challenges above. Instead he takes a 2X6M and (assuming he does well) a 5 year deal when the cap is higher. Even if he doesn't cover himself in glory over the next two seasons, all he'd have to do is earn about 4.6M a season after that to equal out his (likely) current offers. That shouldn't be too hard if the cap continues to grow. I seriously doubt he'd be risking much money long-term if he went with a short deal to wait out the low cap.

This off season is not complete until we get a top 4 RD. We need to patch that hole.

Haha, funny how spoiled we've become in a matter of a week with Dorion's brilliant moves.

Agreed, though. A top 4 D and we are in legit battle for number 2 spot in the division. Especially if Sanderson plays as expected.

Chabot-Marino
Sanderson-Zub

How many teams have a better top 4 than that(considering Sanderson plays rookie season similar to that of recent star D prospects like McAvoy, Miro, Hughes, Byram, Drysdale) maybe 10? 11? I'd say definitely upper half of the league? To match our top 6 which could rival almost any in the league.

Next year is going to be insanely fun. Insanely.

I think that's fair and how I feel now.

It wouldn't be "bash Dorion" territory or anything like that, but it would seem a shame to send the team out with that one very obvious hole left to fill and seemingly having the budget to fill it. I don't think there's much doubt they'll try though, so that's comforting for now. Could drag on in to the summer though and it would be kind of nice to just put it all to bed now and everyone can check out and re-visit things come September.

Adding a top 4 was without a doubt the hardest endeavor for Dorion; or for any team for that matter. Especially the right fit. This is because it will require a legit asset we might not want to lose(or pick the wrong one to lose) combined with having to move Zaitsev to make the numbers truly work.

If we add a top 4 a day before camp, then that is still the greatest off-season ever and a huge, huge success. This piece will be the most difficult and most elusive. I will be the least bit surprised if it takes a while for it to happen.

Agreed, it does seem to be the hardest one to fill and each guy rumored has a bit of a caveat. Chycrun is technically a LD, Weegar is a 1 year to UFA, Klingberg requires silly UFA contract, Marino may or may not actually be available, etc.

I think they're motivated to make it happen though and we will see something change on the backend, whether that's to everyone's satisfaction or not.

Personally, I'd be happy enough if they committed to Zub and got something done with him. At least that would shore up the guys we do have and the internal competition might have some standouts. Obviously a lot is expected of Sanderson and is a wild card in all this.

Dream scenario end of summer:

Zub 5M x 5
Klingberg 6M x 2 (promise to look for a suitor for him next year that is willing to extend him after a bounce back season with us)
Zaitsev to Chicago with a 2nd as sweetener (they'll need to hit the cap floor when they offload Kane and Toews)

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Klingberg
Holden - Brannstrom
Hamonic

Chris Tierney is still a free agent. Does this guy get an NHL contract? Would not be shocked to see him playing in Europe this year.

Of formenton is traded then I guarantee he was part of the whole hockey Canada thing

He seems to fit our identity on the ice to a t and something would have to be rotten for dorion to move him
Makes no sense. If he has no value here he won't anywhere else.

At some point Seth Jones is going to be moved and it will be a haul. Big contract but top pair D man.

I think Klingberg lands somewhere at a below market contract, maybe 4 x 6M.
Jones is a top pair d man. The only place on earth that doesnt thinks so is hf boards.

I'd give Klingberg a 2 year deal. Not the ideal type of D man the sens need. However perhaps Chabot Klingberg can be a Makar Toews type puck possession pairing.

Also Klingberg being linked to us is super interesting. I was looking over this guy’s career and it appears he cashed in at the wrong time.

Signs a 7 [email protected] in 2015 after a great rookie season. He then puts up monster seasons in 15-16 and 17-18 in which he finished 6th in Norris voting both years.

In 2019 a defensive minded coach gets hired and his age starts to show. His play starts to fall off and suddenly his value plumets right before he becomes a free agent. Apparently he wanted an 8x8 from Dallas and probably thought he’d get that on the open market.

Reality seems to be setting in for him. My theory is he sees how loaded our offence looks and is considering signing a 1 year deal with us thinking he’ll put up huge numbers and bring his value back up.

Betting the players are now working on an internal Cap that won’t go over Chabot’s/Tkachuks salary so the core can stay together for this 5 year run.

Norris said give me a fair contract so I can just play hockey with my friends - guessing that’s the new model here until this core group can sign UFA contract in their late 20s

Sanderson, Stutzle, and Debrincat should all be superior players to Tkachuk and Norris so I'm not sure why they would want to use them as a cap.

would you want to be paid less than your coworkers that you outperform? Doesn't seem very realistic.

So explain Batherson to me. Sanderson has never played a game in the NHL.

I’m talking about team affiliation and loyalty and making personal sacrifices to achieve a goal of playing for a Cup and winning it with your friends, you’re talking about individuality that clearly players can be culled from, and they will be culled if they want more then the team can afford, do you remember Daniel Alfredsson?

And I completely outperform my coworkers daily and we still make the same amount of money as union workers. Not sure what you’re talking about

but how many teams will come knocking to the Hawks' door?

I can see the perspective that, it being a Hockey Canada thing, it's something that has received more coverage in Canada and US teams may be less aware of it or at the very least have less access to insider information on who the players in question are or could be

Wishful thinking. If the league is going to suspend or expell the players it's the same recourse. The bottom line right now is that this entire thing is political. Did anyone read the statement from hockey Canada?

'What happened in London, Ontario in 2018 was completely unacceptable and we once again apologize to Canadians, the young woman, and all those who have been impacted. It’s important for Canadians to understand that upon learning of these allegations, Hockey Canada immediately notified police and Sport Canada, and engaged a respected Canadian law firm to conduct an independent investigation of the matter that spanned more than two years. The process was not perfect, but our goal was to respect the integrity of the investigations. Reopening the investigation is a step towards addressing the disappointment so many feel about the outcome of the process we followed.'

The police knew about it. A two year investigation from a credible law firm. But it's being re opened because and MP found out about it.... Then made it public. This is an entirely new level of social 'justice'. Shouldn't the police that investigated it be questioned here?... Isn't that how our criminal justice system works?... Havent heard anything about that... Are we going to re open every case that was settled by law if it's a high profile candidate?... Slippery slope here. Great headline to draw the eye balls away from a collapsing economy and out of control inflation from a failing government. Obviously no one condones what was reported as what happened but why didn't the police deal with this already? If they did why isn't that enough?

You are under estimating Kyle Dubas. In an article I made up for the purpose of this post it was reported that while with the London Knights, Tierney asked to be traded to ... the Soo Greyhounds!

I don’t know the details of why the investigation was reopened. But supposedly the victim did not cooperate with police last time and now she is willing to do so. So that’s akin to new evidence coming to light (presumably) which allows the authorities to revisit a criminal matter.

The civil case is done and settled. But there’s no statute of limitations on rape.
