Oh, I agree, but I think Brannstrom, JBD and Thomson push Zaitsev out of the lineup before the season starts.
Holden can play his offside, so can Brannstrom if we're looking for more offense. JBD and Thomson might not be ready out of camp but by the end of the season or deadline I'm confident at least one will be.

Zaitsev in gone as soon as we can find a way to dump him...
I don't think Zaitsev is really that hard to dump. His 2M bonus has been paid, so in salary he has 7M left. Cap at 4.5. An AAV of 3.5 for a D ranks places you right at 100 overall for a D. That slots at lower side 2nd pair. Drop another M, to get to 2.5, that slots you at 129 overall. That's 3rd pair money. He's overpaid a bit, but more than anything was overslotted the past two years. Moving him down the roster and playing against lesser competition isn't exactly a disaster. Gudbranson just signed 4*4, Zaitsev at 2 years and 7 M left is a comparative bargain lol.

I'm fine paying Klingberg, if we can get rid of Zaitsev.
I haven't watched Dallas much lately, since they've been the hockey equivalent of watching paint dry. But Klingberg has had hip issues which makes me a little wary of paying him with term. He's had surgery on both hips and those kind of issues tend to come back if you don't take proper preventative steps going forward...which is pretty hard to do playing pro hockey. Look at what Seguin has become and what Nik Backstrom may be going forward. Not sure I'd want to sign Klingberg for big money and term. 1-2 year stop gap, sure. 4 years or more, nah.

So additional details from yesterday.

Sounds like Ottawa was trying to get a bit of a 3 way done between Edmonton and Arizona, but it fell through on the Edmonton side so Brown was moved to the next bidder.

PD doesn’t want to miss out on a D, so wanted the additional asset to have as a piece to offer up.

That's too bad. Hope he makes good on getting a Dman though

Any indication if it's a specific D? Or multiple? I hope it's JC, even if the price hurts.

No clue. But it doesn’t seem like the move from Brown was for budgetary reasons. They don’t have to pay anything between now and when they start playing. It makes more sense if it was done with the intention to flip the asset.

PD doesn’t want to be left with options D-Z.

Yeah, I always wondered what the heck happened to Klingberg. I remember how there used to be Karlsson vs Klingberg debates. But this actually kinda makes sense. Dallas has swapped to a very defensive system in the past few years, which is not great for an offensive defenseman like Klingberg.

From what I've read and seen it is also just his 5v5 play that has been impacted, not his Pp time. That's why his point totals are still respectable.

He's still good offensively, he can still pass and skate, it is just that 5v5, they changed how he's supposed to exit the defensive zone and how the forwards as supposed to organize themselves to support a breakout. This has resulted in a lot more turnovers and misplays on his part resulting in goals against.

It really sounds like they switched from a more set piece attack and systems based approach to offense, to a more systemic defensive effort and they rely on Klingbergs skill to generate offense because the forwards are no longer supporting the breakout.

Thank you for the updates man. Much appreciated as always.

Things are slow today after the past week.
Y'all got anymore trade rumors?

are there any good faceoff centers who can play in a 3rd/4th line role avaliable? Would be a saavy pickup by PD

evan rodrigues, stastny?

These numbers look pretty good. Like to line these up with Zaitsev's

I would be happy with Klingberg if we can get him in the low 6 range.

Would be a pretty big UFA get tbh, even if I don't see him as an ideal fit, he'd be a big upgrade.

My question is can we fit him it while also being able to re-sign Norris, Stutzle and DeBrincat?

Shouldn’t be thinking about just upgrading the d. But rather what do we need to compete in the playoffs against the best of the best. Go for that and be satisfied with the best we can get.

Kastelic was 58.3% in the NHL and Pinto will get better

Brucey says the budget for next year (money out, not cap hit) is $74M.

Assuming we can still move Zaitsev's $2M owed next year, and Norris gets $6.25M in salary next year while Formenton and Joseph get $2.5M each, that leaves ~$6.5M for a top 4 D.

Consensus seems to be that Weegar and Marino will be staying put, barring a huge overpay.

Chychrun remains available but lots of suitors and astronomical price.

Klingberg might be the best play.

Yeah, I'm thinking more long term than short term. We can manage for next season, Idk what happens after that .

Keep plugging at options A-C then circle back to Klingberg.
Just heard a recap from JR that Dorion mentioned he could/may start the year with the D as is. That would be too bad imo. They have done so many good things. IMO it was the most glaring area of weakness at the end of the season. Lets hope its just talk.

If someone has the exact words please add.
