My strategy:

- keep Zaitsev this year (bench or Belleville, don't care)
- try to stay in the playoff race until the deadline
- if we're in the hunt then, trade for a RHD rental if RHD is still our biggest need

This should require fewer assets and would be consistent with the relatively short length of our contention window. Next off-season it might be easier to get rid of Zaitsev, or worst case you bury him again and rinse repeat the above strategy another year.

The only risk with my strategy is that without Chychrun or equivalent to begin the season we might miss being in playoff contention at the deadline.
Zaitsev can still play D on the third pair, so sending him to Belleville would be suboptimal.

Unfortunately we have quite a few third pair D: Holden, Hamonic, Zaitsev, Brannstrom, and perhaps JBD & Thomson. We need a better D core. We only have 3 good ones and one is a rookie next season: Chabot, Zub & Sanderson.

Making do with what we have will likely not get us onto the playoffs.

We need to trade Zaitsev or Hamonic to gain the budget dollars to pay Chychrun.
Both of those players would need to be removed, plus other adjustments/subtractions/replacements. Even more adjustments and bigger moves would be necessary if the Senators stick with a self-imposed cap around the same magnitude that it appears to be now. Post #1513 covers this (& #1520).

Just responding to multiple posts.

Cap issues: Debrincat won’t be here next season at 9M. He either resigns at 8M or he is moved. Stu may get a 2 year bridge which will save money until cap goes up to about 90M. Stu would then be in line for a bigger long term deal, think 2 x 6M then 8 x 10M.

Chychrun: He isn’t coming without Zaitsev going so don’t worry about having both.

Greig: He will replace a top 9 player next year if not sooner. Obvious options are Formenton, Debrincat or possible even Pinto.

4th line: Next year the 4th line will not have a single player over 1M IMO.

Performance bonuses: After this year the only relatively significant PB is Sanderson who maxes out at 850K.

Bolded is a sign of a contender

Sanderson's performance bonus goes up to 1.85 next year according to cap friendly, Thomson (.425) and Boucher (.85) could also get some in theory.

Good point on Sanderson, I didn’t see it jumped that high. I’d love to see the breakdown on A vs B bonuses.

Well it's difficult to judge whether he is or not when Arizona's drink is warm and tasteless.
The fact that he's trapped on a team so poor definitely complicates the eye test. But "it's difficult to judge" has never meant "let's assume the best." I don't remember Kyle Turris being afforded that same benefit of the doubt, for example.

Kyle Turris hadn't established himself as top 6 forward on a bad Arz team, Chychrun is the #1 on a bad Arz team, seems like there's a bit of a difference there.

His salary will be $9 million. Only way I see him staying for less than $9 million is if he doesn't have 70+ (40g) points. If we can sign him for $8 million, that'd be dope, but i think he'll be asking for 9

Really wish we never traded Demelo. He was a good guy. Genuinely looked like he wanted to be here
Honestly at this point I wouldn't mind trying to acquire him. He'd be fine on our second pairing and doesn't have much term.

Jets are in a weird place right now, not sure how they "re-tool". I wouldn't mind acquiring one of DeMelo or Schmidt. Schmidt barely cost anything in his two recent trades. I'd offer Zaitsev for him or a couple of draft picks for DeMelo.

Next season is 2022-23. I assume you are talking about 2023-24.

He will be traded then and we’ll be able to let other teams talk extension with him. We would probably end up getting a better return than Chicago got.
