I mean, it's apparently the ask, not what we're willing to give up.
Very true. We've seen lots of ridiculous asks.

Often times people get all hyped up on asks then a trade happens and it goes both ways

What a steal - we gave up way less than the ask
We got robbed - didn't get near enough for what we gave up

Amazed that so many of you are balking at the ask. We've been a mediocre, rebuilding team for over 5 years, and haven't been a true contender for thrice that amount of time, but now we're afraid to send a couple of prime assets to finally have a contending roster from top to bottom?

Come on man.

I understand your view but to me Chychrun is not the guy I pull this type of move for

Lol, it’s a terrible ask, that’s why.

I suppose it depends on how you look at it. As a Raptors and Rams fan, I know the appeal of trading for prime talent for short-term runs. Banners fly forever and such.

At the same time, I think the difference between those teams and this one is that those had a much more established culture. It's easier to get buy-in when that's the established Way That It Is. I think this team is getting there in a hurry. But I don't see them as quite there yet. Your mileage may vary!

For the record, I would be happy if we did get Chychrun and would gladly cheer him on. And I'll be happy if we decide it's not the best use of assets. At this point, the front office has my confidence either way.

It would be nice to compare that ask with other possible options.
Not saying this is "The List" but it is a list. 2021 Norris voting. Omitting Petry, whats the price of everyone blow Chychrun? 2 1sts and a top prospect?
John Marino isn't on this list but .. the player that we need to take a nice step on D does not have to be. There are a lot of names on that list that would be more than ok. Marino went for Ty Smith and a 3rd.
What can we get between the equivalent of Ty Smith and a 3rd and 2 1sts and a top prospect . Zaitsev clouds this a bit bit the money gets offset . Does it cost a 1st to get rid of Zaitsev .. I would guess not.

Theodore would be great to go after. He's better than Chychrun in every measurable way, costs less in terms of actual salary as well.

Dude's a top pairing defender, and Vegas is eventually going to have cap issues this season as they try to LTIR their way into the playoffs. I'd happily pay two 1sts and a top prospect for him.

Vegas needs cheap elc talent immediately as well so prospects like Thomson, JBD, Boucher, Jarventie, etc... could be some of the pieces involved in getting a trade done.

I'd offer a 2023 lotto protected 1st, Thomson, and Boucher to start the convo. Give em back Brannstrom to give them a serviceable NHL player. Worry about trading Zaitsev later on lol

When it’s done it will be a 2023 protected 1st 2 2nds a guy like Thomson/Brannstrom/JBD/Jarventie and Zaitsev.

We may try to add Formenton instead of a prospect

getting Rid of Zaitsev is an addition by subtraction also.
If the Sens were looking to get rid of Chabot, I’m sure you’d want a package consisting of at least Greig, 1st and another piece hypothetically

Vegas will have zero cap issues. They dumped Pacioretty and Lehner is out all year.

They'll have about 7-8M in cap space after Weber, Lehner and Patrick are put on LTIR.

Just need to sign Hague and maybe upgrade in goal if the option presents itself.

Theodore isn't going anywhere.

Vegas won't trade one of their best players on a great contract.

This is what I am thinking too.

These big type of trades never end up being what the “rumoured” ask is.

I reallly don't wanna trade our 2023 first. This team hasn't sniffed the playoffs yet and our division is tough, we should be much improved but the gap between sens and top 4 atlantic teams was massive.

I really believe the Atlantic is up for grabs. I’m not sold on Tampa or Toronto. Great players on both teams but Tampa has played a lot of hockey with short recovery time the last three years and I’m not sold on Torontos goaltending.

Capfriendly says they're $5 million over right now, even after moving Pacioretty. Broissoit is injured along with Lehner, so they might need to make some moves for goaltending help.

Then again, they seem to pull capspace out of places the sun don't shine

IIRC Capfriendly doesn't take LTIR into account before the season starts.

I'd pass on that too. Thinking must be to win a cup during Giroux's three years
I mean, it's apparently the ask, not what we're willing to give up, but yeah if they are willing to give up those assets it would be with short term goals in mind

The 5M over figure is counting the 16M+ that is being spent on Weber, Lehner, Patrick and Brossoit.

Weber is LTIRetired and it sounds like Lehner and Patrick are out all year.

That's 14M in space opened up. albeit with many roster spots to fill.

With how great the draft is next year, there is just no way the Sens should trade an unprotected 1st.
Top 3 for sure but outside of that, it is worth it.

Plus if we can't believe that the current roster PLUS JC can't be a contender it is time to fold up shop. Best team we have had in over a decade - they won't be sniffing the bottom of the standings.

The short sightedness of trading the equivalent of three 1sts for Chychrun is also compounded in case Zub doesn't re-sign, we're again left with zero RHD, but no 1sts until 2025 for assets to trade for a RHD.

I'm OK letting htis play out, seeing what we have in JBD/Thomson, getting rid of Zaitsev for less than a 1st next offseason, and then seeing how desperate we are for a RHD if Zub leaves too next summer.

Maybe the team already knows the odds of Zub resigning are good/bad and are trying to bide their time with Thomson/JBD or leverage something later in the season when a better deal comes along because people fall out of the race or injuries happen.

We still need our core to gain experience. Stu, Norris and Batherson have less than 2 seasons worth of games.

Adding Chychrun makes us a contender for the next several years as our core is mostly locked up and incredibly young.

We'll definitely need our next few 1st picks if we keep going into seasons with a thin top-4 D though, that much is true.

I wonder what the plan or strategy is now as well given they have acquired Debrincat & Giroux.

Debrincat's current contract term is only 2 years.

Future acquisitions don't need to have a lot of term if the window is just 2 years (or 3). The thinking & strategy could be pretty different now versus what is was a year ago. Its higher reward but with higher risks scenario now potentially.
