This is accurate. That he demanded or even requested a trade isn't, to the best of my knowledge.
AJ was the first to report it locally and he said Brown wouldn’t mind a change of scenery. I wonder what his issues were, definitely not role.

He probably wants to play a top 6 role on the pp this year before a UFA contract. Maybe didnt like management I dunno. Dont see how he wouldnt have liked DJ. I think the deal is too bad at this point given the uncertainty. Its ok to like some moves Dorion has made and dislike others. He is a really good player, this team needs all the really good players they can get and he didnt make much money for what he brings to the table.

I really just think this team needs to find a way to dump Zaitsev. That way they can sign Dehaan. He is a very stabalizing player on the back end, the more they have of that the better this team is going to play. He can get the puck out controlled, this teams strength will be the forwards the more they have the puck the better.

Agreed that the D needs further stability but I think the price to dump Zaitsev is astronomical unless he is part of a bigger deal like Chykrun. There are so many contracts teams either have to or want to dump and really almost nowhere to send them.

As for Brown, Dorion upgraded with Giroux who provides more offence, mentorship and is elite on face offs. Keeping Brown as a 1 year own rental is not something we could afford on our budget IMO.

I’ll stack our top 6 up against anyones, our goaltending is in a large tier behind TB, NYR and NYI, our 3rd line could be excellent ( pending ), our 4th line is potentially good but unproven for the most part.

We have a very good top pair and bottom pair. The wildcard is Sanderson and whatever we can find to pair with him (I don’t love the internal options).

My back of the napkin math shows that we have about 2.5-3M left in a 74M budget to upgrade the 2RD position after Formenton and Branny are signed.

As much as we talk about salary and internal caps, was looking at Gallagher's contract just now and was shocked to see he's getting paid 6.5M, 8M, and 9M over the next three season with a totoal of 5 more years (out of total 6) of 6.5M AAV cap hit.

That's as much or more real dollars than Chabot, Norris, and Tkachuk will get over the next 3 years, and 1.5M more AAV than Batherson.

I always felt like we were overpaying but clearly, it's better to overpay for productive years and on the long haul, than go the short contract and pay out for sentimental value once the player is on the tail end of his prime but a fan favourite like Gallagher's situation ended up being (he signed this 6 year extension at 28 years old after 2 50+ point seasons and a 62 point pace COVID shortened season).

Imagine if they'd have signed Gallagher to an 8 year x 4.5M contract instead of the original 6 years x 3.75M, they'd be washing their hands of his contract now as he's declining and becoming injury riddled.

Might mean resigning Batherson after his current 6 year contract might be risky - although hopefully Drake's 6" and 20lbs advantage allows him to age a little more gracefully.

That strategy needs to have a fuller examination as signing young players based on projected future performance has a downside too, meaning the players who do not perform as projected and get over-paid.

I think Zaitsev could be traded to a team needing to reach the cap floor by adding a prospect or pick as the bait, given that he has only 2 years left on his contract and virtually half of the coming season's salary is already paid (the bonus).

I don't believe there are any teams that currently need to add salary to reach the cap floor, maybe next year but they won't be picking him up now for that.

All teams are above the cap floor. There is very little cap space league wide, dumps are getting more expensive every week. It’s tough to move good players much less bad players.

Really hoping if we acquire Chychrun, we give Arizona the draft picks and prospects that it takes to get the deal done, but hopefully they take Zaitsev just to have a serviceable NHL player.

Anaheim and Buffalo have the capspace, not sure if they'll find use for Zaitsev, but really hope someone see's Zaitsev and does what Jarmo did when signing Gudbranson for $4 million aav x 4 years

That's a lot to give up for Chychrun, depending on the prospect. If Greig or Pinto are involved I'd pass. I'm also hesitant to go three straight years without a first.
Same, but Chicago's apparent wants vs. what they got leaves me somewhat optimistic about what Dorion can do with Arizona.

To say nothing of what adding Chychrun will do to the cap sitch. Inclined to pass on this one too if it’s anything more than, say, Lassi/Z/1st/2nd. Not because I don’t think Chyc would improve the team, but just because that’s a lot to give up.

As long as the ask is two 1st round picks, Chychrun will remain in Arizona.

Yikes

Arizona has to be realistic, but then again, this is a team with a plethora of draft picks, can't keep any drafted players happy, is in perpetual rebuild, and has no clear vision for the future.

The most I'd offer is a lotto protected 1st for next year, Brannstrom, one of JBD/Thomson, and a prospect like Jarventie/Sokolov.

If they want Grieg or Pinto, they have to take Zaitsev and give us a 2nd rounder or two from their 134 2nd round selections.

i doubt anyone is giving two 1sts. Maybe a player who was a former first
Well, the rumours were Arz wanted picks and not prospects so idk.

Chychrun is interesting because he has 3 years left on a team friendly caphit, but the actual salary escalates pretty quick. We probably care less about the caphit and more about salary.

Yikes, a $5.4 million salary next year and a $7 million salary in his last year. I think that alone will make it difficult for Ottawa to acquire him

Yup. The draft was approaching, Chicago wanted to get into the top 10 and it was time to make a decision. Arizona doesn't have a hard deadline the same way Chicago did but I'm sure there will be some motivation to get it done before training camp for both sides.
