Why would you think Zub is hesitant to sign in Ottawa let alone adamant about leaving
Hale is using the word "If" a lot in his post, so not sure he's thinking that Zub will leave. Its just how I'm thinking (guessing) what his intent was based on the words he typed.

I like Zub but you are basically choosing Zub over Chabot which doesn’t make sense to me.
I'm not even remotely saying that.

Zub is an RD. Chabot is an LD.

If we acquire Chychrun and Sanderson is what we think he can be, effectively we'd have 3 LDs that could all be considered top pair quality LDs. Does that make sense? Having 3 LDs at a top pair level? And of the 3, it might well be that Chabot is the weakest of the 3 defensively.

What I am saying is if it evolves that way, the highest cap hit of the 3 is Chabot, he won't have an NTC next summer and if I was looking to deal from strength and manage the cap, Chabot is the guy I would move.

IF it evolves that way

Yeah, trade Chabot and then stuck with just one good defenseman in Sanderson again with bunch of trash, and waste their prime away like we did with Karlsson and currently Chabot

What a joke!

Is that what you understood from my posts on this?

Ya, there's a joke there alright

I don’t think Chabot should be traded purely from a optics perspective. The French Canadian superstar D in a bilingual market. I rather have Chabot over Chychrun any day of the week also.

I'd rather have both along with Sanderson and have 1 of the 3 on the ice at all times, keeping them fresh and performing at high level, Not burning them out, having them play 30 minutes a night

Considering that, in 2024-2025, the team will be paying 30 million (real) dollars to Chabot, Norris, and Tkachuk alone, I think there's a good chance the senators will be spending above the cap soon enough.

Spending "above the cap" would result in penalties by the league.

Spending "above the cap" would result in penalties by the league.
See the "(real)" comment?

The sum of real dollars will likely be above the cap limit, especially if ottawa continues to pyramid their contracts to max out in mid 2020's

This is certainly allowed. It also happens with LTIR maneuvers as demonstrated by TB

Adding Debrincat and Giroux was not cheap . It should have been thought out in context of keeping Zub at a competitive number and bolstering our D corps which has been seemingly an after thought for years.
I am all for prospects making the step into the NHL but imo D is such an important position to gain possession and move pucks out of the Dzone and the answer is not just that the forwards have to play D as well.. They do but that doesn't mean you don't need a good D corps to win. I'd rather go a little cheaper up front. That 23/24 hump would have been a reason to bridge Norris as well. But the savings would not have been huge. I am sure they have had a notion I know it does get tight there assuming an 83.5 cap in 23/24.
If we want to add a D at 4.5 ish we will have to move more money out. E.g. Joseph. So We all better hope JBD or Thomson or both are pretty close and one can be a great partner in the top 2 pairs.

Zaitsev has an NHL contract that includes 2023-24 so I assume you think he will be traded.

So…if AZ retained half in Chychrun would people be more inclined to send Grieg along with our 1st + +

JC @ $2.3

Grieg
1st 2023
2nd (wash)
JBD/Thomson
Zaitsev

Based on SofA salary breakdown above this would likely solve our budget crunch & allow us to keep the big 6 + Pinto up front, along with Chabot, Zub, Sanderson, Chychrun long term. (Which to me makes the deal palatable).
Then the cap opens up

That's still too much value going back for a 20-25 pt left shot d-man. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with giving up our future for Chychrun. Greig, Pinto and our 2023 first are key assets to this team but everyone is happy to ship them off.

For that package I'd expect a top 2 RHD.

You need a steady stream of players like Greig to fill out roster spots. Almost assuredly one of Debrincat or Formenton won't be a part of this club in 2 years. I get that people want to go all-in, but the true contenders didn't get to where they are by staking everything on a 2-3 year window where they haven't even made the playoffs yet.

IF it evolves that way
Chychrun would play RD.

I don't know if this has been touched on at all, but I wonder if us moving on from Zaitsev is affecting our ability to sign Zub. Can he speak or understand english at all?

18 years old - 24p per 82
19 years old - 23p per 82
20 years old - 31p per 82
21 years old - 34p per 82
22 years old - 60p per 82
23 years old - 37p per 82

Calling him a 20-25 point D is extremely inaccurate.

He's scored at a 45 point rate over his past 3 seasons, and was only injured long term in this past season.

He led the league in goals as a D as a 22 year old and top 10 in points

Chabot’s past 3 seasons:

179gp 19g 89a 108p 0.60ppg

Chycrun’s past 3 seasons:

166gp 37g 51a 88p 0.53ppg

I mean, if you view Chychrun as a 20 point defenseman, then obviously nothing in this entire thread makes sense to you.

I totally disagreement with your assessment of his history and ability. But, if I did agree, I would absolutely not trade for him.

I don't understand why people are so adamant about keeping Greig. Unless you think he is going to be a top line player even then a top pairing defensemen is more valuable.

I understand wanting to use his ELC but if the sens are going for it they desperately need to find someone to help Chabot . The clock is ticking and you have to pay to get

This is one of the big reasons why I'm not so keen on Chychrun trade.

Yes, in a non-cap world having 3 guys on LD who could all be stars would be amazing. Top end D on the ice for a full 60 minutes. But..you also can't neuter your top guys by having 2 out of the 3 pairing up with bottom pairing quality partners.

If Chychrun was a true RD, this wouldn't be an issue. Then a trade would be sympatico.

If we have to move a big contract, doesn't it make a lot more sense to trade Brady over Chabot?

Chabot is the better player

D >Wing

Brady starts getting paid 10.5 next season (holy hell)

Brady's NMC starts in 2026

Brady probably starts slowing down before Chabot because of skating ability and the type of games both play.

See: Gallagher, Lucic etc

Can't trade Chabot. Forget how good he is on the ice. He was also the first one to commit long term to Ottawa. That means something.

You remind me of Tom Hanks……WILSON.

There’s no reason why it shouldn’t be under 2.5 mil. Joseph is better than Formenton and had UFA years on his contract, and he got 3 mil.
Term deflates the AAV though. If we signed Joseph to 2 years, it'd probably have been closer to 3.5M.

Yeah, apparently Zub can't communicate with the team at all which is why he wants to leave in FA to sign with a team that has more Russians :sarcasm:
