If it comes down to losing Zub because of a lack of cap space, I'd easily trade one of our forwards to make room.

Our offense is stacked but our D is an issue even with Zub. Imagine how unbalanced it would be if he walked.
I agree but which forward.

Batherson is on a value contract.
We just signed Brady, Norris and Giroux
We just traded for Debrincat
Stu is our best shot at having an elite Centre.

if we lock up Stu and Debrincat at 8M each we need to go cheap on the rest of the roster until 24/25 to stay under the cap because that’s 56.5M out of an 83.5M cap on our top 6, Chabot and dead cap.

I suspect it is budget as I do not see this team spending to the cap.
Considering that, in 2024-2025, the team will be paying 30 million (real) dollars to Chabot, Norris, and Tkachuk alone, I think there's a good chance the senators will be spending above the cap soon enough.

DeBrincat is the obvious choice.

Will probably need to overpay to keep a star American forward in Ottawa long-term like we did with Bobby.

If Tkachuk gets 9.5M x 8YRs from a team in a desirable location without income tax, easy to see DeBrincat demanding at least that amount of money on a long-term deal (if not 10M or more) to stay in high-tax cold-weather Ottawa.

Might make the most sense to trade him next off-season, hopefully after an excellent season, and recoup futures. The nice thing is that it was a major buyer's market this off-season and teams should have more money to work with next off-season. Not sure if we'd be able to replace what we traded to get him, but it was a smart gamble for Dorion to make nonetheless.

Unless manage my thinks thomson or jbd can do the job

Would be foolish to think that.

They should be replacing Hamonic and Zaitsev, not Zub.

With Tkachuk and Norris being paid 8million, we don't have another 8 million to pay DeBrincat, especially when Stutzle's contract coming up and potentially Sanderson's, after that.

Our focus should be resigning Zub, spending big money on a top defenseman, or trade for Chychrun

This is our forward core in a year's time without DeBrincat:

Greig - Stutzle - Batherson
Tkachuk - Norris - Giroux
Formenton - Pinto - Joseph

This is our D in a year's time without Zub:

Chabot - Thomson
Sanderson - Holden?
Brannstrom - JBD

Obvious choice would be to trade DeBrincat if there's not enough money in the budget for both him and Zub on long-term deals.

Not because Zub is better than DeBrincat, but because we need a top 4 RD far more than another top line forward.

Not to mention that we could get a sweet package of prospects and picks next off-season for DeBrincat, while we'd get nothing by letting Zub walk.

If they move Debrincat great. I thought it was a bad move to begin with. We needed to add to Chabot, Zub and Sanderson not get another forward. There is a reason no team really has 6 “top 6” forwards, it doesn’t fit under the cap.

Debrincat doesn’t prevent re-signing Zub, it prevents us adding another top 4 D AND keeping Zub.

Adding Debrincat and Giroux was not cheap . It should have been thought out in context of keeping Zub at a competitive number and bolstering our D corps which has been seemingly an after thought for years.
I am all for prospects making the step into the NHL but imo D is such an important position to gain possession and move pucks out of the Dzone and the answer is not just that the forwards have to play D as well.. They do but that doesn't mean you don't need a good D corps to win. I'd rather go a little cheaper up front. That 23/24 hump would have been a reason to bridge Norris as well. But the savings would not have been huge. I am sure they have had a notion I know it does get tight there assuming an 83.5 cap in 23/24.
If we want to add a D at 4.5 ish we will have to move more money out. E.g. Joseph. So We all better hope JBD or Thomson or both are pretty close and one can be a great partner in the top 2 pairs.

Zub at 5 m >> Norris at 8m especially since we have Pinto and Greig close to ready and Stutzle the #1 C.

I definitely would have preferred bridging Norris versus throwing a massive long-term deal at him based off of a single year of high-end production in which he had an unsustainably high shooting percentage.

But I think Sens management projects Greig at left wing over center going forward. Don't think he'll be blocked by Stutzle, Norris and Pinto from playing in the top 9.

Norris contract is just bad.

Imagine DeBrincat goes off with Stutzle this season and plays himself out of our budget

why the team should have been ruthless with the Brady contract like Brady was with us.

If Brady signs 7m or something Norris probably does 6.5/7 and every million counts.

Now we're stuck projecting Stutzle, Debrincat, and Sanderson signing Norris and Brady level contracts when they are all superior talents and should be getting more. And probably losing Zub while we're at it.

Brady probably sits out the year and forces a trade if the most we offer is $7 million …

some real captain shit huh

and yea yea i know its a business.

Sorry …. You want him to take a pay cut to be captain?

Consider the damage a Brady holdout would have done last year to the 8000 fans willing to attend games and development of Jimmy, Norris, Bath etc.

a pay cut? who is taking a pay cut? I just expect a captain to take at least a fair offer, knowing fair contracts are how cups are won. especially not to press for an overpay off a 50 point career high that might destroy the cap structure of the team because there will be 5-6 better players on the roster.

and yea Melnyk and Dorion really managed the brand to a point that they were forced to do it and Brady took full advantage.

I think he’d think he is taking a pay cut -
