Signing Zub is a no brainer, and the only reason it wouldn’t happen is if Zub does want to sign here.
Anything between $3.8-5 million in a range of 4-6 years is a very valuable asset on the ice, and if you need to trade him someday.

That aside, what if he isn’t signed by the deadline? Do we keep our own UFA? Or would you trade him for a 1st in the 2023 draft?

After only getting a 2nd for Brown and now having Zaitsev's contract stand in the way of a D acquisition, while being non competitive for their entire tenure anyways, it really makes you question that deal in the first place.

If he won't sign trading him is the best option. I think they can sign him.

Dealing Brown for a 2nd has budget trade written all over it.

I was hoping we could put that 2nd towards moving Zaitsev.. Obviously not ideal. Not sure why he would not already be moved. He may be being discussed as part of a bigger package.

Or the realization we need to sign Stutzle, DeBrincat , and Sanderson and Pinto .and Zub.

Same
I’m wondering if he nixed a deal to Arizona.

Brown only has one year left on his deal. None of those guys needed to be signed this year.

Brown would of been a great depth guy who could move up the line up if there were any injuries.

Zub signed for two years to maximize his earnings, not because he wanted to get out ASAP of Ottawa before he even got here.

Hard to imagine Dorion doesn't think keeping him is critical. I'm not too worried: Dorion has more money, if Zub leaves/is traded, he priced himself out of Ottawa. It happens, sucks but no hard feelings. If it comes to that, I doubt it will be because we'll have lowballed him.

For sure some obvious budget considerations there. In a bubble I'm fine with it considering what we brought in, just weird with the scenario we face now of maybe being stuck with Zaitsev's contract while Brown is gone for very little, that original deal looks like it had some long term consequences, similar to the Phaneuf deal.

Me too. I thought for sure he would be gone now. Dorion was so aggressive to free up money with other guys that he is obviously the next one they would want dealt with. Golden Jet may be right that Zaitsev's trade restriction rights may be the problem, again mirroring the situation with Phaneuf potentially.

Why are people so concerned about Zub, he is signed for another yr & they have two RD cooking in Belleville? If they can acquire another top 4 before the season starts or during the yr/TDL that would take off the pressure to sign an overpayment contract. I hope they are able to re-sign him, but if they don't it's not the end of the world & they have another full season to make that decision.

They are in a position to take there time evaluate properly & decide accordingly to improve the team long term. There are lots of defencemen on the market every yr, getting a good one at the right price takes time & effort. They should know at some point during next season whether he wants to return or not & if he does & they want him, a deal will get done, it usually does if both sides want it.

In my view, the team needs and I'm sure is counting on one of those Belleville D being able to play 20 a night in the 23-24 season. That's not an unreasonable expectation.

I agree they are in a position to take their time.

The disaster, if it happens, is getting little out of the two Belleville RDs.

I can’t see how we can add a top 4 D AND re-sign Zub. Which would you rather ?

Previous comments made by Dorion indicated that the plan was to replace him internally with Thomson and JBD.

Hopefully neither looking like sure-fire top 4 Ds at this point means the plan has changed and Zub is a priority.

I'd rather sign Zub, acquire a top 4 D via trade now, trade Zaitsev & Hamonic to free up salary dollars, and play the following on D:

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - New Top 4 D
Holden - Brannstrom
7th D would be JBD or Thomson

Brown only has one year left on his deal. None of those guys needed to be signed this year.

Brown would of been a great depth guy who could move up the line up if there were any injuries.

But budget dollars were required to sign and pay Debrincat and Giroux.

If they acquire a top 4 D through trade or free agency (next summer) than re-signing Zub is not that great a priority & they will still have JBD and/or Thomson to fill at least one other RD spot. Kleven is likely coming after this school season is over & should be in the mix as well.

It will be difficult for them to replace Holden, Hamonic, Zub & Zaitsev so I expect them to re-sign at least one of them & it likely should be between Zub & Hamonic or hopefully both. I expect that Kleven & JBD should be on this roster at some point over the next two season.

Still think the entire key to the season success is Cam Talbot. If he plays anywhere his play last season we are a playoff team and a very dangerous playoff team
The entire key to our success is how well our backup goalie performs ?

No....but I don't want to make a desperation deal, either.

If there isn't a good deal to be made, for a reasonable price, that benefits the team...then we need to have the fortitude to stand pat. For now, anyways.

A bad deal that gives away our first rounder in '23 or some blue chip prospects for a guy who isn't a good fit will set the team back years.

Giving away a 1st and a blue chip prospect isn't a huge risk at this point, and I don't see how a guy like Chychrun would be a such a bad fit that it would ruin everything. It's time to stop playing it safe.

Chychrun should only be added if we also have the money in the budget to sign Zub.

Otherwise our defense would only be fixed for a single season.
It’s not a budget problem, it’s a cap problem. Specifically in 23/24.
