Your outlook on just how poor a destination this city is is not something I share.

Certainly Dorion could have signed Zub to a 4 by 4 type deal that in hindsight might have been great. Hindsight might also have led to a Zaitsev situation where arguably his best season in the NHL was his first. Hindsight might also have led to those two first round RHD picks being ready to play and us having a log jam

I try not to apply hindsight to what's transpired in the hockey world.

So do you think there is a >50% chance he signs here ?

Crazy thought....do the numbers work to hang on to Zaitsev for the year, and bring in a true top 4 RD?

He's overpaid, but still a serviceable blueliner, and it would be nice simply to have another healthy body there this season, just in case. And maybe that contract would be easier to move or buy out next summer, perhaps?
I’m not sure he’s serviceable.

We have needed better defencemen for several years now.

Dorion has given us Holden, Hamonic, Gudbranson, Del Zotto, Josh Brown, etc. who are not the quality D we need to ice a decent playoff roster.

Next year we will have Chabot and Zub. We are hoping Sanderson can come in as a rookie and play on the top 4. Maybe Brannstrom develops further.

"Where's the beef?"

People saying they are okay with going in with the current defense?

We are one injury away from having on of the worst defense in the league.

We desperately need to add a top 4 guy

I think that as the season plays out and the variables are analyzed, if the team is looking to sign Zub he will sign here.

There is zero chance the Sens don’t want to sign Zub… so I’m not sure what you are saying …

Cap may be an issue. We’ve gone heavy on our top 6 to the likely tune of about 43.5M if we pencil in Stu and Debrincat in at 8M AAV. Even keeping numbers low our F 7-13 will be 11M. Add Sogaard to replace Talbot it’s another 3.7M. Another 5M goes to dead cap. 9M to Chabot and Sanderson. That’s about 72M against an 83.5M cap with only 2D include. So what 10M for another 5D if we are a cap team ?

Who is available? Chychrun would cost an arm and a leg all while being a left D (and if you’re concerned about injuries..). Marino and Klingberg are no longer available. Weager was dealt too, so I doubt they’re looking to move him (but maybe Tanev/Andersson?). Doesn’t seem like much is out there, and I really hope Ottawa doesn’t overpay just to bring someone in.

Why is adding Soogard to replace Talbot another 3.7 million. Is Soogards next contract 7.5 million.

We are in august and there isn't much avaliable? Surprise Surpise

Dorion has had a year to figure it out. Hopefully he has a plan

Chychrun would cost something but that is cause he is young has a contract and can play top pairing

Zub had what? Less than 50 NHL games under his belt when he signed his 2 year deal?

And we had 2 first round RHD picks in the pipeline

I didn't have an issue with the term when he signed it. And if Zub came out this past season with a less than stellar year and was locked up for 3 more, Dorion would be crucified on these boards.

Zub didn't have a lot of bargaining power and Dorion didn't need to buy up Ufa years coming off 47 games in a weird season

Talent is talent, and Zub clearly had talent. It's evident in almost every shift he plays. He's our third best defenceman after EK and Chabot over the last decade. As a GM you have to be able to identify talent.

We'd be lucky if JBD and Thomson become as good as Zub.

Nor should we be refusing to sign some guys that may ultimately be moved if necessary. As long as the contracts aren't ridiculous then someone like Zub could stay for say 2-3 years and then we move him.

If we re-sign Zub then we can’t afford to add a D. I’m fine either way but we are going down the TML path with our salary structure. 23/24 is where it is a problem after that we are in great shape.

At some point you have to bite the bullet if you want a complete team. I'd rather they overpay now than go into yet another season with an incomplete defense.

Adding a big name d and moving towards cap hell - and paying a bunch of assets, especially ELC cost controlled ones to do so - us a bad idea imo. Chabot, Zub, Sanderson, Holden, Brannstrom, Hamonic with Zaitsev as 7D is not horrible, especially with JBD and Thomson pushing for spots. With better team attention to defense and a fwd corps that is likely to see a lot more puck possession shares than in recent years, we might be pretty good relative to the past couple years.

Chychrun would be great and I don’t think the valuation of assets he would cost in proposals is off, I just don’t think Dorion should do it.

No....but I don't want to make a desperation deal, either.

If there isn't a good deal to be made, for a reasonable price, that benefits the team...then we need to have the fortitude to stand pat. For now, anyways.

A bad deal that gives away our first rounder in '23 or some blue chip prospects for a guy who isn't a good fit will set the team back years.

I’ve mentioned before but would Calvin de Haan be an upgrade on what we have?
I know he’s had injuries but he’s a local kid with a business (Ridge Rock brewery) I feel he could be useful.

Hes barely an NHLer. If they sign him he's gonna have one foot on the ice and one foot at his brewery.

I’m not sure he is right now. I think Hamonic may be a bit better. But haven’t watch de Haan ina. While I don’t think he’s good enough to go offside
