Besides Chychrun?

1. Calgary is still likely to put someone on the market. They're going to have 10 signed defensemen on one-way contracts once Kylington signs. Although Tanev will likely start on LTIR I don't think they'll want to lose one of their cheap depth defenseman to waivers. They'll at least want to get down to 8 healthy defensemen before the season starts. I also don't think they'll try and dump a depth defenseman. They're going to be playing one of Andersson, Weegar, or Tanev on their third pairing once Tanev is back alongside one of Kylington, Hanifin, and Zadorov. That starts to be an expensive third pairing. While I can see them holding off on a trade until Tanev is back, they're also going to be spending 30M+ on their defense to start the season and they need more forwards. I have no idea who they will move, but I think they'll move someone, and likely before the season starts,

2. Winnipeg is apparently listening to offers, likely Dillon and Schmidt, but potentially Pionk as well. Any of the three could fit in Ottawa. Dillion has the size on the left side Dorion craves and would be an upgrade on Holden. Giving Ottawa an improved stop-gap on Sanderson and a better partner for Hamonic/Zaitsev. Equally, a trade for Pionk or Schmidt that would send Hamonic/Zaitsev back to Winnipeg could also provide some stability. None of the three have the 4+ year contracts that have made Dorion wary.

3. Las Vegas is still in cap hell. They have 6.5M to re-sign Hague, Kolesar, Roy and fill out their roster They should only cost around 5-5.5M, but once they add another forward to fill out their 21 person roster, it will be tight. If one of those RFAs gets paid too much, they might need to move someone. Obviously Vegas isn't our biggest fans after the Dadonov debacle, but we forgave them for Stone, so maybe we can still do a deal. McNabb would be a good upgrade on Holden, and they have plenty of RHD depth. That said, I doubt they would move anyone who is a true upgrade on what we have. Also, we have no cheap RHD to send back.

4. If Dorion is truly looking at offensive defensemen, we know he likes Barrie. We also know that Edmonton likely wants to move him and can't take back much salary. We could likely get him for cheap if we wanted. That said, we would then have to find a home for either Hamonic or Zaitsev.

5. Leafs are going to dump Holl. I don't think we'd be interested, but Toronto could, in theory find a home for him which could, in turn, put a different defenseman on the market.

6. The Penguins have 24 players on either one way contracts + Ty Smith. They're also over the cap, and have have 8 defensemne. I don't see a fit though unless Dorion REALLY thinks Pettersson is going to bounce back,

7. CBJ is in much the same boat as Pittsburgh, but I don't see them trading any of the guys we'd want (Boqvist, Gavrikov,) being available. I'd love to grab Gavrikov though.

8. NJD likely has Severson on the block, but I don't see a great fit in Ottawa. They won't have interest in Zaitsev. Zub would be pretty lateral for us. The only way I see a trade working is if we send them Harmonic + pick. (giving them the option of depth in case Nemec isn't ready), while not marrying them to a long-term contract and giving them someone who can still play in the top-4. It could theoretically work. For us, it would give us another option besides Zub if Zub decides to walk and keeps us from having to sign a guy long-term.

9. Islanders are allegedly trying to move salary. Although we aren't a great fit for what they want to trade 9A forward), We might be a great third party to facilitate a trade. Ex: Calgary gives up a defenseman for an Islanders forward, Ottawa Sends a pick to the Islanders and a cheap defenseman, and Ottawa gets a Calgary defenseman.

That's what I noticed so far.

Honestly if we can get Mayfield with an agreed extension, I'd do it. Islanders fans have said they're fine with Formenton even with the WJC debacle going on. Mayfield being a top 4 normally might be too high, but as a top 4 partner for Sanderson it's worth it. Also, Mayfield would be cheap af extension wise.

Dillon and Severson are two defenders I thought of as well. Not as sexy as Chychrun, but options nonetheless.

The advantage of these two is that the cost to acquire would be less. Dillon plays both LD & RD apparently.

I think the idea of looking at cap constrained teams with excess defenders is a good idea & I have been thinking of the same thing (didn't go through a thorough exercise on that though).

Mackenzie list is pretty much the draft order the week before the draft. But throughout the season I swear I saw talk of Chychrun going third or 5th
His stock fell as the season went on, he was 5 at the midterm ranks, but he had a poor CHL prospects game and his game didn't develop the way scouts though it would through the season so he was already hearing footsteps at that point. They were already talking about guys like Juolevi, McAvoy and Bean potentially passing him as the top ranked D.

Apparently Arizona and Chychrun want a trade soon. LA in the race too. Dorion want one of Crouse or Fisher include in the deal
