Yawn 🥱. OK I guess.

I watch sports for what happens during the game, not what gets said afterwards. But that's me I guess. And I never realized that Tom Brady was so entertaining and such a magnetic character off of the field, or Steph Curry for that matter. But maybe I'm just a bit jaded or something...

Yeah it would be nice if hockey had some more colorful personalities. But again who friggin cares if your happy with watching the sport itself. We see the passion on the ice and that's all that matters.

I like that hockey is a bigger multinational sport than the other 3 major leagues. It's cool to see all of the different cultures blend in together and make a team identity. Key word being team there. Hockey is and always be a sport that promotes and puts the emphasis on being a team guy ahead of being an individual.

But when you follow a team closely and see the unique personalities from the locker room shine through in a natural way - like they're not selling their own personal brand in every interview, or playing a character on camera - its even more captivating as a fan of regular people.

Not all of us are looking for a larger than life celebritiy to cheer for in the sport we love. The sport is good enough entertainment on its own. And there's enough tryhards in the digital world of self promotion that we live in, so I'm okay with it not being a thing in the NHL....
As you touched on, in hockey you get to see a lot more player character on the ice as part of the actual game. You get to see emotions boil over frequently, and you get to see player celebrations, scrums, fights, play stopping penalties, trash talking, etc…

Hockey culture is also a lot more about having a team first attitude, because it’s a team game that requires team chemistry a lot more than it requires individual skill. The NBA can get away with the colourful self adulation and me first attitudes across the board, super teams, picking coaches, etc… but that kind of behaviour destroys hockey dressing rooms because winning the game is entirely dependent on the guys buying in and playing for each other.

You do see a similar behaviour from teams like SA and the raps in the NBA. There are me first teams and team first teams. I also don’t really see much difference in post game interviews between hockey and basketball in general. There seems to be a lot less off season gossip and team jumping by stars though. I find the NBA off season can be a little like TMZ to be honest.

Personally I have zero interest in arrogant sports players. Conor McGregor type self promotion is gross to me personally (much prefer GSP’s media style). I like hearing hockey guys defer to each other and the team play, because I think it mirrors character qualities that I appreciate more in society in general.

Let the leagues be different, we don’t need flamboyant self promotion, the NBA has that nailed. Hockey needs to continue to grow in terms of inclusiveness, amongst other things, but I don’t think we need the league to be more publicly self centred.

Ramble ramble hahaha!

It certainly is. When you have a top 6 getting paid like our top will be, you have to scrimp and find value elsewhere on the roster.
I don't disagree, but I would hope we could at least squeeze out a decent contract for a 2nd top 4 dman.

Without Zub, we have one known quantity in Chabot, a bunch of guys we know aren't good top 4 options other than maybe in a supporting role, and a few kids we hope will be at some point.

This D will be a mess if all of Zub, Hamonic and Holden are gone after this season. We can fill holes, but not 3 of the top 6 and realistically our current best 2/3/4.

I also would like to see some contracts viewed as interim pieces and something we can potentially move if necessary. As long as we don't hand out bad contracts, you could sign a guy like Zub and move him in say year 2 or 3 if need be.

I’m starting to believe they are not planning on re-signing Zub.

They would be aware of how willing Zub was to give up UFA years in negotiations.it’s very likely Zub took less money on the two year deal to get to UFA as fast as possible and control his destination.

Based on what? Nothing has changed recently. He's a good player and I know he's a fan favorite but not exactly the type that you pushing to sign an extension for when he has a year left on his deal.
Based on the fact that we are looking to add a D like Chykrun.

I’m enjoying the fact that much of the off season talk for the Sens is worrying about running out of cap space. I did not think we’d have that discussion anytime soon but here we are. We’re worried about fitting Stützle and a new top 4 D and hoping to keep DeBrincat while staying under the cap. That’s just a much better convo than past years.

Isles are reportedly trying to sign Kadri and may want to clear some cap space.

If they want to move Scott Mayfield cheap enough I would not mind if the Sens were interested.
He is a big physical right shot D (6-5 220) on a cheap contract expiring this year. ATOI was 19:46 last year. I think he could be a good depth signing.

BIG is GOOD! :)

Sanderson could have easily played in the NHL last year, but Dorion wanted him to further his development at college. I'm thinking he steps into a top 4 role almost immediately.
Temper your expectations until Christmas, then we’ll see, he should start with third pairing minutes, and then evaluate, and give him more as he earns it.
Unless he looks good in camp.

Sanderson's role will be very interesting early on. If they don't end up bringing anyone else in, the competition he will face won't be too stiff, so I could easily see him playing top 4 minutes in short order. Chabot/Zub are the only guaranteed to be in the top 4 and Hamonic is the next most likely imo. With two of those guys on the right, he really just needs to out perform Brannstrom and Holden which seems plausible.

I think the bottom 4 will get pretty even minutes to the point that calling on or the other the 2nd or 3rd pair will be pretty arbitrary and depend on the night.

The injury at the end of the season is a bit of a wild card, as it may have affected his offseason training enough that he'll take some time to get back into the groove, but from a development standpoint, he's one of the better College D I've watched. I have very little doubt he can come in and immediately make an impact similar to how McAvoy or Werenski did. I'm not expecting him to be the next Makar or Fox out there, but playing in the top 4 to me is a given, if he can't do that he'll spend time in Belleville, but I don't expect it.

This would be a top ten, if not top five top 4 D core.

If he hadn't broken his hand repeatedly would you already have this classified as the best top 4 in the NHL?

Or did losing half the season and almost whole summer have no impact on him whatsoever?

The crazy thing about the 2016 draft? I think if Logan Brown wasn't there we were going Chycrun.
