The issue I see for Staios is that I don't think Brady would ever ask out prior to July 1st. It just doesn't make sense for him to give Staios the option to deal him to the highest bidder with no say on where he ends up. Would be in his best interest to only do so after July 1st, as he could then dictate his destination thanks to his full NMC.

Sens fans should know better than any fanbase in the league the damage a NTC can do to a trade return after Spezza and Heatley. I think you're absolutely right that if he were to ask out after July 1st we'd get bent over in a trade return.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that Brady is fine playing out his contract here and then leaving via UFA, as he'd then get to go to wherever he wants without the potential backlash of having been first traded to some other team down south for a big package of assets just to leave at the first opportunity, but even if that's the case I don't think renting Brady for 3 years is in the best interest of this organization long-term.

Do I think Staios has the stones to trade away the captain of this team without him asking out first? I really don't know. He hasn't shown any kind of ruthlessness to this point, if anything he's been overly hesitant to make changes, stressing stability and patience. Might just do the easy thing, which is kick the can down the road.

Brady maintains the control regardless of where he goes because the NMC travels with him. So he doesn't really have to play games and pretend to want to stay in Ottawa just so that he can wait for his NMC to kick in and control his own destiny.

That is because being traded to any one team doesn't stop him from coming to that GM 6 months down the line and letting Mike Grier know that he gave San Jose a good shot, but it's really not working out and he wants to be traded to Florida or New Jersey, and that he is willing to work with them to get a trade done and maximize their return - but if they drag their feet he will use his vast media connections with Spittin' Chiclets to nuke his trade value.

If he doesn't want to be in Ottawa anymore, and wants to be with a big market contender, the most logical move for everybody is to work together to maximize the situation. Does that mean Brady will get to say Florida or bust? No. But he might be able to give Ottawa a list of his preferred destinations - which Ottawa can use to assure those teams that if they give up multiple A-level assets, Brady will want to be there - and Brady can use the list to ensure he doesn't end up on Columbus or San Jose.

I expect Brady would play out his contract on a non-preferred destination as long as he's back in his home country.

Requesting a trade so soon after being dealt would harm his reputation and make him out to be a diva. Don't think he'll do that just to get to where he wants to spend the rest of his career a year or two sooner.

But his contract being up fairly soon does make it more likely that if he were dealt it would be to a team like New York, New Jersey, St. Louis or Florida, where he would presumably be interested in staying long-term.

So yeah if he is traded in all likelihood it'd be to one of those teams, as they'd be willing to trade more for 8+ years of Brady than a team like Columbus, Anaheim, Chicago, etc... would be willing to pay for (probably) 3 years of him.

At this point I think Tkachuk's NMC is basically in effect, regardless of the contractual minutiae. He's spent the last 7 years in a shithole market that has been furiously spinning its wheels and making zero progress. There is no way a team in a similar situation - like a Buffalo, Utah, or Anaheim for example - would ever just charge headlong into acquiring the guy without getting the Tkachuk clan's blessing. Not gonna happen. All that would do is put that team in the same situation the Sens are worried about.

So whether you trade him today, or at the draft, or 18 months from now it's probably going to be to one of the same half a dozen teams. It's Florida. It's Tampa. Vegas. NYR. New Jersey. Dallas. Maybe St. Louis. That's probably about the extent of it.

I wonder what a fair trade for Ottawa would like like with LA. I don't think they move Clarke, but they have plenty of forwards they can trade. Kempe, Moore, Greentree and a 1st?

Ugh, i hate looking at our draft stock and seeing how little picks we have in the top rounds. Only 1 first and second rounder in the next two drafts, no fourths, and 4 third rounders that we need to hit or hope are valuable enough to get us something useful in a trade. Really wish Staios was able to have gotten at least a 2nd added to the 3rd from the Chychrun-Jensen trade
While I usually want to retain our draft picks so that we can build our team gradually over time, I think that there will be occasions such as now when we will need to trade some of our futures for better players now. I think this is one of those times.

The team has some good players but not enough of them to consistently make the playoffs and become a SC contender. If we can spend some draft picks to upgrade the roster now, adding to Tkachuk, Stutzle, Norris, Batherson, Pinto, Chabot, Sanderson, Jensen, Zub, Kleven, Matinpalo, Ullmark, Merillainen, we can become a consistent playoff team and SC contender over the next 3 to 5 years. Worth a try I think. If it not does not work out, then go "full rebuild" after that.

What are we trading, though?

We have to forfeit one of our 1st round picks in the next two years, so if you trade the other, that'll mean the team will not have had a 1st round pick in 4/5 years.

2021 - Boucher
2022 - No 1st
2023 - No 1st
2024 - Yakemchuk
2025 - No 1st
2026 - No 1st

That's bad news for future success.

And all for what? Hopefully a wildcard?
