Oof. Idk about that. Pageau was getting 17 + minutes a night in NYI. He's not getting that here. Nostalgia wise, I get it. But if we have a relatively injury free year, we're in decent shape down the middle. That 5M price tag is a problem
I love Pageau, but with Stutzle, Norris, Pinto, and Greig, I'm not seeing him as a wise investment. I'd rather get a winger for a bit cheaper (someone like C.Brown would have been good)

Don’t think Pageau is a negative asset, not sure why they’d have to give up picks to move him.

He’s still the exact same 40-45 point, defensive Center he’s been throughout his career. 5 million for another 3 years isn’t a burden for his game.
Cap restrictions have changed what a negative asset means. For instance, if Pages was placed on waivers would he get claimed, my guess is that he wouldn’t.

Is that dynamic on the cusp of changing with the cap going up next year? Food for thought I'd think and just thinking out loud I suppose.

As an aside, based on a quick analysis, there's about 10 teams that have no cap space, so there's still a fair amount of teams that could do something this year and might be in even better shape with more room next year.

But, with regards to Pageau more specifically, the $5 m makes it difficult and a center isn't our greatest need at the moment. I'm guessing nothing happens until the Murray thing (potential buy-out) is settled.

Also, I'm wondering if we don't go into the season with about the same amount of cap space that we had last year at the same time (from memory around $4 m give or take a million or so)?

Pageau doesn't feel like the right fit, but we could do worse. 3 years is pretty short in the grand scheme and if he could be had for basically free, it could make some sense. Doubtful, but maybe they'd consider a Joseph for Pageau swap. I'd do that in a second.

Is this what the Sens insider has been up to lately?

Hopefully this means we can get back into receiving breaking info on the regular!

I wonder if Pinto may actually be a better fit on the wing.

Usually goal scorers without great playmaking ability belong on the wing.

Pinto is a capable distributor in the middle of the ice, his work on zone exits and entries will determine how effective he is as a C. Don't need to be a pass first player to be an effective C. This upcoming season I'd like to see him be more assertive as the puck carrier, thought he deferred too much playing with two skilled wingers in DeBrincat and Batherson. I think holding on to the puck for a bit longer would do him wonders in regards of his ability to create offense.

Can't see how a team like Chicago would pass up on him if they get him off ww for free. They've been overpaying for vets all summer to fill their roster, Pageau would br a great addition for them.

or a team like the Quacks could use him to insulate their young talent.

SJS or Winnipeg as well. Winnipeg could use him as a Copp replacement and some depth, especially if Scheifele is moved. SJS needs to ice rosters that help whatever young guys they have playing while trying to tank.

I'd take a chance on Pageau, but only in the scenario where Joseph is sent packing. I wonder if Islanders AND Sens kicking in a little something would be enough for a 3rd team to take him.

To NY Islanders: Cap space (Tarasenko?)
To Ottawa: JG Pageau
To Anaheim/Chicago/Arizona: Mathieu Joseph + Isles Cond. 3rd/4th + DET/TBL 4th (from OTT)

Joseph's deal is backdiving and Pageau's deal was frontloaded so you go from paying out $9.3M over 3 for Joseph to paying out $12 over 3 to Pageau. I know the cap difference is $2M/season, but cash works out to less than a million a year to upgrade from "Matty 3 goals" to a legitimate shutdown 3rd liner who steps up in big moments and can move around the line up in a pinch. Doesn't hurt that the guy is a local cult hero and would presumably be happy to be back in his "hometown".

Probably not enough value for the 3rd team given the lack of overall cap space this off-season and the term on Joseph's deal, but as flawed as he is he's probably better than what those teams plan on icing on the 4th line.

why not if they happen to be the best players available?

We’ve been down the path with Karlsson on here not doing that again with you.

In terms of Pageau I don’t see the fit. We have Pinto so unless Pageau comes with a huge pay cut to play our 4C he simply doesn’t fit. He’s way overpaid to be a 3C at his current contract.

He’s also the type of player we shouldn’t be buying into. He’s older , smaller and has really hard miles on him.

So many reasons why he’s not a fit in Ottawa unless the Isles retain a huge amount

I mean, in the scenario where Joseph is out the door it's $2M in cap and $1M in real dollars per season over the same 3 year term.

I haven't seen anyone go crazy with the Pageau stuff honestly, he's just a very capable middle-six forward who would be an upgrade on 6+ of our forwards and is/was apparently available this offseason. He's also local and as much as that shouldn't matter is probably does to a segment of the fan base feeling scorned by DeBrincat.

Last season Norris gets hurt and we end up having to play Pinto/Kastelic/Brassard way too many minutes and it was a big part of the team not being able to level up enough to land in the playoffs. I don't see it as a bad idea to have some depth (you could play any of Norris/Pinto/Pageau on the wing in this scenario) so that the team isn't stuck in the same place next year if they face an injury.

The team having 3 good to great young centers =/= the team having good center depth. They are another injury to a top-2 center away from playing multiple guys too high in the lineup.

I don't remember what you said about Karlsson but there is a massive hole on this team for

-an RD
-player who can slow the pace of the game
-dominant 5 on 5 player

Karlsson checks all three, basically an even better D version of Giroux, and the team would have been lost without Giroux last season.

Pageau yea is meh, we could probably do better with the money. but centers can play wing and in the event of injury it gives you flexibility, having 4 dope C's sounds dope. plus we have like 3 forwards who play defence, so its not the worst idea.

I was more curious why you don't like acquiring ex Sens players though. I'd welcome all the good ones back with open arms if they make team better.

You can check my posts in the Karlsson threads. I make it pretty clear
