Most teams arrange travel with charters from Delta, United, Air Canada or Swift Air but as far as I know only the Red Wings had a dedicated plane from Olympia Aviation.

I had no idea Eastern Airlines still existed in any form.

Florida Panthers Will Travel In Style With New Charter Plane

eastern_panthers_charter1.jpg

The Panthers and Eastern Airlines have entered a leasing partnership, announcing a customized 737-700 aircraft which will transport the team across two nations as they play out their 82-game schedule.

The charter plane is outfitted with a Panthers logo, an American Flag and a #FlaPanthers hashtag decal on the winglet.

“We are pleased to partner with the iconic Eastern Airlines for this upcoming season,†said Panthers Executive Chairman Peter Luukko. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our hockey team, affording us the opportunity to save time and money as we travel throughout North America.â€

The organization will see a net reduction in yearly travel costs due to the aircraft requiring low maintenance and operating costs.

The Sharks have leased their own 727 for at least the last 6 years.

Other teams do as well.

Here's an old thread with a bunch of team plane pics:

In 2011, a Miami charter company bought the rights to the Eastern name and logo from whatever successor company owned them after Eastern's bankruptcy and shutdown in 1991.

I know the Bruins and Blackhawks use Swift.

The Bruins tend to use a suburban airport (Hanscom Field) instead of Logan.

It's not the same company, Viola just bought the intellectual property, it's a startup project.

(a quick google search says it was dissolved in '91)

The same leasing company also has a (short) 747. The Sharks leased that (with painted tail logo) for their European Premiere travels. (It was actually cheaper than what the NHL found for their charter options.)

I believe this company is associated with the AFL Sabrecats (and Fry's Electronics), and have an agreement with SJC so that they can land "after hours" up to 10 times/year. (Airport closes to landings after 11:30, unless plane is below certain decibel level of noise. Wings landed late in SJ once and were fined like $10k or something for curfew violation.) Sharks are able to take advantage of that a few times/season rather than landing in Oakland and busing down players back to SJC if they land late -- saving about an hour. (Especially in the playoffs such an advantage is another coup to the "home" team.)

Air Canada Jetz seems to be the charter carrier for all Canadian teams except Edmonton http://aircanada.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=862
The six-year agreements begin at the start of the 2015-16 season and cover the Montreal Canadiens, the Ottawa Senators, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Winnipeg Jets, the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks. The service will be operated by Jetz, Air Canada's in-house charter carrier, which uses Airbus A319 aircraft outfitted with 58-Premium Class seats to offer extra legroom and a private jet-like experience. In addition to the six Canadian teams, Jetz also provides air transport services to the Colorado Avalanche.

Seems like an expensive decision for a team that is struggling financially. Will this actually save costs?

I never believe what they put out as losses.

They lose money on the team, but bring in the money from concerts and events at the BBT.

Besides, there have been no signs of ownership being frugal since buying the team. I think they are putting in a good effort, and willing to take some losses these first handful of years, to try to turn the Panthers around. and/or get the green light to build the casino close by, if that's still in their master plans.

At this scale probably. I don't know the details of the CBA, but I guarantee the guys don't fly economy, it business or above. I bet they also use to have a travel staff, to handle the booking not to mention last minutes change and delay.

Excluding injured players (or those returning for personal reasons, like family death or birth of child), players are nominally flying with the team.

While AHL and ECHL teams fly commercial, I believe the CBA mandates NHL charter flights.

It IS a competitive advantage to fly charter over commercial. No 60-90 minutes arriving early. No excess baggage fees for equipment. Dedicated security line and straight on to plane. And if doing crossing borders, the immigration/customs agent(s) often come to the plane.

The teams also can control the quality of foodstuffs on the plane served to the players, as well as the timing of any meals.

(Do you recall that the NHL teams in Europe for the European Premiere games were "stuck" there for a bit after 9/11. As they had charter flights, they actually returned a bit earlier than many other flights. Some teams even offered to transport a few Americans stranded in their locale back to US.)

Only one team was involved (Colorado) as they were scheduled to play 3 games in Sweden but only one was played.

does anyone on here have actual evidence the Panthers are struggling financially or are we back to anecdotal analysis based on perceptions? I find that a lot when I read these threads....
