That's probably a consideration by the league. Makes little sense to me that divisional games have less of an impact on the divisional races themselves (26 games of the 82) then the games against the other conference.

I want them to add on 2 more games to the schedule & cut preseason games to 5 max per team.

vs Division 4 games each 28 games
vs other Division in Conference 3 games each 24 games
vs other Conference 2 games each home & home 32 games
84 games total, rounded & equal for all
