He’s a really good player to have around your kids in the AHL, but still chasing his dream enough…. NOT to sign an AHL deal, unless he has to. Money wise, $250-$500k in the AHL, he’s right around the stage of taking a couple of nice paydays in the KHL or Swiss League. Problem is, he’s more of a banger, so he fits in NA better. If he goes overseas, he’d fit better in Germany. At the end of the day, he’s after a two-way deal on an NHL contract. If he doesn’t get one, he’s one of those players good enough to get a mid season deal overseas.

He’ll give you an honest 4th line shift in the NHL IF you need him too. Matt hasn’t played a lot the last couple of years. He suffered a season ending injury in Detroit two years ago, so got to collect his full NHL salary, then came back mid season of this last year, to help Grand Rapids go on their run to the playoffs. Didn’t play in the NHL this past season. As soon as he was activated from his injury, he was put on waivers and sent down.

That’s who Matt Luff is these days.

Great right up, thanks. I can see why Zito is bringing him in.

What are the Panthers doing? They let so many good players walk to divisional rivals and are signing washed players to PTO's while everyone else are finding guys who might actually contribute. Why not keep Lorentz?
We have faith in our pro scouts, but this is not a signing of major consequence. Interesting none the less.

Every team signs “washed up” guys to PTOs Hoping to squeeze just a little juice.
Isn’t the rule any team can, at any time during a player’s pto, sign the guy to a contract?

What “good players” did we let walk to a divisional rival? You also left out the FA signings and our entire core is still place.

Wait you are criticizing the team that just won the cup for signing a guy to a PTO, while your team has notoriously floundered every year and... also just signed a guy to a PTO?

The “Sky is Falling” people overreacting to a PTO is crazy.

You want Matt Luff around your young players in the AHL. Not every signing is about your NHL team. You have 50 contracts for a reason.

The reason you sign Luff to a PTO is, because you likely expect one or two of your AHL players to graduate, and there will be a significant spot open on your AHL team. A spot you need production from. That, or you’re looking for a 13th forward who will likely clear waivers, once you do call someone up. You’d rather Luff be sitting in the press box, than one of your younger players, who needs to be playing everyday in the AHL than sitting in a press box.

That’s why he has a PTO and not a contract yet. He’s likely a backup plan, and you need a couple of players who will likely clear waivers.

Are the Panthers traveling to Europe with the other teams? I don't get why they sign all these guys on top of the other PTO's
