Fixing the Shootout

After watching watching too many shootouts where players take way too long getting down the ice, or even worse, watching Patrick Kane basically stop every time and be able to move a half mile per hour in on a goaltender, I feel the shootout needs improvement.

To keep players from being able to have the unfair advantage of pulling a "Patrick Kane", I think the opposing team should be allowed to have a back-checker who starts at the far blueline to help prevent the slow motion breakaway.

Thoughts?

seems like a ridiculous rule change to respond to the tiniest problem (I'm not even calling it a problem, but it seems to be a problem for you)

Wtf?

The shoot out sucks but Patrick Kane is one of the few that I would actually tune in to watch in it. . . He's incredible . . . And I hate Chicago

The problem is that is not a "skills competition", it's a continuation of a game, that has implications on standings, etc. In the all-star game, sure, do what you want, but after 65 minutes of hockey, it should be decided in a game-like situation. Allowing a back-checker makes the shootout more game-like

I don't think this needs to be done, but if it was to happen I'd suggest a shot clock as opposed to a player chasing.

That could be a worthwhile suggestion. I just think it is unfair for any goaltender to have to try and stop a player who can take that amount of time.

And for anyone who thinks Kane's move was nicer than Toews' move, you are out of your mind.

Hm, I said the same thing in the hockeystream's chat. Didn't think people were listening :sarcasm: I think it would put pressure on the shooter, which could change the way the shooter thinks. Also takes pressure off the goaltender.

Goalies these days get every advantage why not put them behind the 8 ball a bit?

The only bridge out of town has a pot hole, so let's blow it up...

Also, it's not really a game like situation even adding a back checker. It is still a SO. A shot clock is a more interesting idea (some guys go so slow and they really screw it up), but I don't think adding another player in is the best of ideas.

And how would you suggest the back checker be implemented.

Having him too close to start would give an unfair advantage to the checker. Not allowing the offensive player to get momentum. Having him too far away would leave him flat footed.

Also what stops a player in a one-on-one situation like that from committing a penalty? What are the consequences for that penalty?

So the shootout is too niche but you create a situation just as niche. I don't really care about all these details I've posted, just pointing out that you've created a logistical nightmare. It's far more complex and unnecessary solution as opposed to something simple like adding a shot clock.
