Yes. And then they got swept in the first round by Columbus. You don’t think they had anything to prove? They got shutout 4 times in the preseason and lost 5 of 6. Saying we’re not the same caliber team as Tampa Bay is not seeing the forest for the trees. The point is simply that these games mean nothing.

They had something to prove in the playoffs and were a shoe in to make it there. They didn't need to build any chemistry or even give a f*** in the preseason. The Rangers' are an also ran organization whose rebuild I think is not as successful as we think it is. What f***ing rebuilding team let's a young top 6, borderline top line player go for nothing? But they really needed Kreider so that we could get swept by Carolina. And we really needed #toffness.

It really isn’t a comparison. It’s illustrative of the fact that the preseason is meaningless. We’re talking about PRIOR to Tampa winning two consecutive Cups. In fact, we’re talking about a Tampa team whose most recent exploit was getting swept by Columbus in the first round. And then they show up to preseason and get shutout 4 times. It clearly didn’t mean anything.

I can google any team in any given year and it’s a 50/50 chance their preseason record didn’t have any correlation to their actual record.
It's not about the record. It's the lack of effort and lack of execution. Most of these guys look like they have no idea what they're doing out there. I hope that changes when the regular season starts but the signs aren't good.

So you throw out the game completely? We had our #1 center playing this game, our #1 goalie playing this game, Kreider who's a top line guy for us, our #2 d-pairing. If we were any good we'd have these guys show something. Or if they worked as hard as Gallant makes it sound like they will. f***, this team is another mess of a franchise but unlike the Giants have been a laughing stock their entire history.
I don’t throw it out completely but I take it was a gigantic grain of salt.

After years of watching Lundqvist be unable to stop a beach ball in preseason (and sometimes beginning of the season) and then put on a Vezina caliber season and the Rangers go on playoff runs I’ve come to terms with preseason being something not to read too much in to.

It is what it is. It can give us good reads on how certain players progressed in the offseason, good reads on kids vying for spots and it can also have vets look like crap as their get their timing back and make shift lineups that lead to poor results. It is what it is.

Am I naive to want a couple of our young guys to be used as bait for teams to take on Kreider and Trouba?

Yes because no one is that desperate for young players to take on that much salary and term.

People are predictably overreacting here, neither player is as bad as they showed tonight (well... Kreider has looked exactly like he did for most of last season so maybe he is.) But we're stuck with them for a while.

Signing Kreider will go down as the worst thing JG did as GM of the Rangers. Just a dumb and unnecessary move.

With all due respect, as you know we get along as posters, you have a tendency toward extreme reactions with this team. It is game 3 of 7 preseason games. I am deliberately taking a measured and patient view because, frankly, the over reacting (from many, not just you) is utterly predictable.

If you had told me two weeks ago that I could triple my money by making one accurate prediction, I would have predicted drastic, sweeping over reactions from this board if the Rangers didn’t look good in the preseason. Not joking.

Everyone really needs to breath. As we make cuts, ice a roster that comes close to what we’ll actually be icing, get closer to games that actually mean something, and then actually get to the games that mean something, I’d be happy to revisit these hot takes. Right now, I simply refuse to get my panties in a twist about game 3 of the pre-season with a brand new coach and 50% of a roster.

Blais can't even score in games that don't matter. Also, there's no such thing as games that don't matter, they all count.

Pre season games don't, unless the rules changed and no one told me.

Blais has actually performed well in playoff games. How did Buch look the second things got difficult last year? Or in the bubble?

Lundqvist also was a notorious slow starter in his seasons. Plus, Lundqvist might have earned the right to look like ass, have Miller and Trouba?

My problem is being -9 in three games and winning the one game where we overmatched the other team in talent. If they lost three games (so better record) all within the 1-2 goal range I would have not given a shit. Or much less of a shit.

I’m honestly not worried about the veterans. Worrying about Trouba and Kreider etc is silly.

but kravtsov Lundkvist Barron Miller CHYTIL they can’t show up to games like this. The devils kids sure didn’t. The islanders kids sure didn’t. They all worked

I liked Gauthier tonight I’ve liked Pajuniemi too. He’s always involved

geertsen I have zero clue why he’s here.

Hunt is far from special. 13 is 14 forward at best

Mckegg? Looks awful. I’m amazed he got a contract it’s retirement time for him.

2019-2020 preseason.

Tampa Bay Lightning.

Five losses. Shutout four times.

2019-2020 Stanley Cup.

2020-2021 Stanley Cup.

Someone should have told them how important the preseason was.

Well one of many differences between them is that in the two seasons before that Lightning preseason, they won the President's trophy one year and lost in the conference finals in the other.

The Rangers haven't even made the playoffs since 2017, let alone have anywhere near that type of success that the Lightning 0-5 preseason team had had.

Our lineup today is comparable to the lineup the Bruins iced on Tuesday. I know we didn’t paste the Bs like the Swamp Rats pasted us. But our lack of offense is kind of reasonable considering the lack of chemistry.

Stop caring so much. It’s the preseason.

Look, when we had range days in the military and had to run from behind cover to the next available cover under simulated fire, no one was breaking their ankles or trying to set the world 100M sprint record. The one time I ever got shot at in the Middle East one of the guys in my unit literally sprinted for cover and slid to get behind cover so hard that he broke his leg. He didn’t get shot or injured because of the attackers. He broke his own leg.

Dumb story. The point is - whether WE like it or find it acceptable, or not - people don’t always take things as seriously or try as hard when they know it doesn’t count. And as much as you are saying they “need to” have a better preseason, the bottom line is that these games don’t count.
