Big ups to all medalists, homer props to USA for topping the medal table.
Doesn't work that way. Hong Kong is a territory of China, but it's treated separate from the nation itself. Like Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.Well technically if you add Hong Kong's golds to China's total then they'd be topping the gold medal count.
I actually think it's not as much as it used to be. Back in the day it was always the US vs the USSR and it was like an extension of the Cold War.With each Olympics I feel like there's more attention and talk given to the total medal count and I kind of don't get it.
Medals are overrated. :p

Germany is getting weaker and weaker.
Again, doesn't work that way. WAY MORE qualifiers than a single nation is permitted per event. You can't combine medals by multiple nations like that.EU easily won the OG
Cycling has really fallen off a cliff, in (men's) gymnastics there aren't anymore the few individuals capable of collecting a bunch of medals and also various throwing competitions in athletics have dried up. Also in judo and table tennis a clear drop in performance even compared to Tokyo.Germany is getting weaker and weaker.
But the Nordic countries together also have significantly fewer inhabitants than Germany. E.g. Sweden, Denmark and Norway together have approx. 22 million + Finland(who didn't win a medal) 27.5 million.German metal worked more before 2021 and in sports it's harder for Germany, but Germany's effort is better than the Nordic effort despite some medals of the northernmost Europe in the total.
Germany should invest where they have traditionally always done well. Of course you shouldn't ignore the new sports. Schools should actually promote sport a lot more, since children these days spend all day at school. In addition, low-income families with talented children should be given more support. Such projects are light years away. Unfortunately, the trend in Germany is that performance is viewed as something bad. There should no longer be any certificates at the Federal Youth Games. Everyone should be a winner and have fun. In the long run it becomes more and more difficult with competitive sports.Cycling has really fallen off a cliff, in (men's) gymnastics there aren't anymore the few individuals capable of collecting a bunch of medals and also various throwing competitions in athletics have dried up. Plus Germany really sucks at many of the new sports like breaking or rugby sevens or skateboarding or sport climbing or BMX/MTB... That's at least in part on way too rigid promotion and funding structures that can't react to the changing landscape in sports.
Well after abit of Googling it says that things may change after the 1 country 2 system agreement ends in 2047 and Hong Kong may potentially have its athletes become apart of the Chinese team, but I guess we'll see when the time comes.Doesn't work that way. If they were the same, they would not have their own athletes. China would not get more qualifiers And thus those medals couldn't be combined.
If they become part of the Chinese team, that means they compete for China qualification places. Thus no increase in China athletes sent to the Olympics since each country has a limit on qualifiers.Well after abit of Googling it says that things may change after the 1 country 2 system agreement ends in 2047 and Hong Kong may potentially have its athletes become apart of the Chinese team, but I guess we'll see when the time comes.
If China and Hong Kong had been combined this Olympics there wouldn't be much overlap because both Hong Kong gold medals were in fencing where China didn't win any medals in those events.

His point though was that they'd qualify in fencing and win medals there since they're better than China's.If they become part of the Chinese team, that means they compete for China qualification places. They would replace members of the China team if they are better. Or not if they're not.
