Zadina was a pretty consensus top 3 pick. Hughes was more in the 6-10 range. You can’t look at it with current knowledge. The same thing happened to Edmonton in 2016 when the consensus top 3 player dropped to us and we ended up with Pulju instead of Sergachev. Hindsight you let Pulju keep dropping, but you don’t know that at the time
I'd say top 4. Him and Brady Tkachuk were pretty interchangeable. For example, Brady was #3 for Bob (generally considered the best list at predicting the draft) and for HockeyProspect.com who in my opinion have the best draft related product.
But, I will say, NHL teams should be better scouts than any public list. Their resources far outweigh the public scouting community and Central Scouting. Drafting a player because the public has him above another guy is just sloppy work, and indicates playing it safe. Like, Puljujarvi was ahead of PLD on every single list, but Jarmo made the right call. Now, on the opposite side of this you have Juolevi over Matthew Tkachuk, where Benning went against the public and it was disastrous.
