I could be misremembering, but I think that was mostly just Habs fans who wanted Svechnikov.

That's correct. Svechnikov was a clear-cut #2 pick in the same way Eichel and Laine were. Those threads were just pure wishful-thinking speculation by fans looking for a narrative where Carolina would pass on Svechnikov.

This thread reminds me how pissed off I was when Zadina got headshotted at the Traverse tournament. Columbus was taking the approach of hitting everything in sight and it climaxed in someone taking a high run at Zadina "because it's his chance to get management's attention". That guy's now a non-contract ECHL'er.

lol.

Prime or ‘Pre suckage’ Toews was a Top5 center...

‘Suckage Toews’ was still a Top20 center, Kotkaniemi was never going to hit either level
He's only 6 months older than Kakko. His top end potential absolutely is top 20 center.

That whole tourney was bullshit. Columbus brought a ton of plugs like that guy and and played like assholes. They won the tourney iirc.

Kotkaniemi is better at 20 years old than Toews is now, what's the point?

way i see him is when he came into pro hockey he was very talented but not physically hardened enough , the physicality needed to succeed caught him off guard . so much so he couldnt find his comfort zone the first few years . but now ide say hes just spent two years training hard off ice and burned off the baby fat and hardened up . and he came out this year looking like he now knows what it takes and confident hes developed to that level . hes evolved from a kid to a man . now you see a confident very smart player thats constantly working and making smart plays with or without puck and no matter which team has possesion . hes stealing pucks , making smart passes , able to use excellent edges and hands in the o zone to holdonto puck making time and space . not scoring alot but everybody knows his shot is top notch and thatll come . imo hes shown himself to easily be a top 6 player , and at sametime making it impossible for anybody to judge him as of yet not capable of playing on a top line .

Jonathan Toews for almost the entirety of his prime was at the very least a top 10 center in the league. I just don't see Kotkaniemi getting there, and that's no knock on him. It's just that there are some very good young centers in the league right now who are going to be here for a long time.

A better comparison for Kotkaniemi would be Krejci IMO

Zadina is only 21, and while he has been given a shot at NHL games, he hasn't been surrounded by the talent of some of his peers

Most of us Wings fans are very excited about him and he had to earn that excitement back after his D+1 season.

Zadina is a completely different player than when he first joined the organization. He's not some one-way sniper type winger, he competes all over the ice and has elite skill to go along with it. Where he ends up depends on how far he can take his hockey iq and skating ability.

And stats are not going to tell the story right now for him considering he's being centered by Valteri Filppula and receiving stretch passes from Marc Staal.

Random question, sorry to hijack the thread, but I noticed that Filppula had a sort of random 66 point season with the Wings in 2011-2012. Was he playing with Datsyuk or Zetterberg or something that year? Seems like an otherwise 40-45 ish point forward during his prime years
