What’re some of your favorite fan theories from movies or television?

Recently just came across this one suggesting that Sean Connery in “The Rock” is actually James Bond in the movie and it’s the actual final Connery-Bond film.

That in The Matrix, humans never lost control.

The theory is that the "real world" in The Matrix is itself a Matrix for the machines. They are all plugged into a virtual reality where they won and enslaved us

GoT (Books not show) time travelling fetus theory

It's funny how that came out 6 years ago, and was born of salt and smoke fans having too much free time in between books. For reference, A Dance with Dragons came out TEN years ago.

I like the theory that in The Office (U.S.) Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, always introduces himself and his company name since he is aware that he is being filmed, and he's trying to get free ads out of it when the documentary finally airs.

More or less sums up most of GoT's fan theories.

Game of Thrones certainly deserves special notoriety here. I think a lot of it has to do with prior to the show there was already a well deserved thriving fan community for this stuff, as the A Song of Ice and Fire series was maybe only half way complete and the books were full of hidden meanings and conspiracies. Then the show got really popular and a number of people started going crazy playing me too on the 'theories' trying to get clicks for their youtube channels. But a TV show isn't going to work as well for these things, and the show writers were more hacks and not nearly as clever as GRRM, so rushing the show to conclusion outside the obvious of resolving Jon Snow's parentage they all ended up being pointless.

Funny timing. I just watched The Rock for the first time this previous weekend and made a comment that it felt like a Connery Bond movie to me to my wife.

1) James Bond is a code name.

It's the official cover name of MI6 agent 007. The 00 program is drafted from all Her Majesty's armed forces and 007 is reserved for the Royal Navy, traditionally a Commander. Down through the generations a few men have come and gone since the Cold War; each one gets a new legend complete with family plot, ancestral home, all the various Britishisms. His counterpart in the CIA is Felix Leiter. That's how he's been all these different guys over the years, including briefly turning black for a little while in 1983, then finally committing when the new Bond came on board.

2) End of Ex Machina. Ava the sentient (maybe?) robot has escaped her captivity. She eventually reaches Los Angeles. When in transit, peoplewatching or wherever, she is found and brought to a suburban tinkerer's house. Over the course of months, they build a rapport and she eventually consents to allowing the tinkerer to examine her programming systems. He learns how to replicate her basic thought patterns, create memories, and a new industry is born. That tinkerer? Eldon Tyrell, father of the Tyrell corporation and creator of replicants.

The video in the OP makes a good argument against this theory, starting at 2:07. It points out that the Bonds played by Moore, Dalton and Brosnan all refer to the death of Tracy, who married Lazenby's Bond, and one the Craig films indicates that the character's parents had the surname of Bond, as well. The theory does make sense of how Bond keeps changing appearance and is always in the modern era, but the films seem to not care at all about those inconsistencies and care more about the consistency of the character's backstory.

I've been through the books so many times (both reading properly and audiobook) that I've started to have to delve into Gurm's other works  I've just started Fevre Dream which is apparently about vampires. Apparently there are many parallels to ASOIAF in some of his sci-fi works too, which often get mentioned in theories.

However far-fetched the theories and however meaningless these lines may be, there's two bits in the books which give me instant chills every time I read/listen to them:

"All dwarfs may be bastards, yet not all bastards need be dwarfs." And with that he turned and sauntered back into the feast, whistling a tune. When he opened the door, the light from within threw his shadow clear across the yard, and for just a moment Tyrion Lannister stood tall as a king.”

"Even after all these years, Ser Barristan could still recall Ashara’s smile, the sound of her laughter. He had only to close his eyes to see her, with her long dark hair tumbling about her shoulders and those haunting purple eyes. Daenerys has the same eyes. Sometimes when the queen looked at him, he felt as if he were looking at Ashara’s daughter."

The big Labowski is the guy from The men who stares at goats

The guy from The Matrix and the guy from Bill and Ted are the same person....just further down the time line

Oh man, there used to be days and days of reading asoiaf forums and perusing books for proof. A fair bit were indeed ridiculous (Varys is a merman!) but to be fair there was a lot of good work done as well. R+L=J started as a fan theory that become so prevalent it was just assumed (and eventually confirmed obviously) but Southron Ambitions, Lyanna as Knight of Laughing Tree....those are solid and damn entertaining.

Kingkiller Chron is awesome for this as well but seeing as how Rothfuss is locked away in the same subteranean chamber with GRRM, Scott Lynch, etc with no apparent means of communicating, who knows if we ever learn more.

Naruto was originally supposed to go like this:

-Sasuke attacks the Kage summit, after which the Kage vote on the United Shinobi Army. Leaf/Sand vote yes, Cloud/Mist vote no, Rock abstains. This is why Oonoki was introduced as "the Fence Sitter". Everyone leaves frustrated nothing was accomplished. Tobi doesn't reveal his plan for no discernable reason.
-Then an arc featuring Kabuto and his army of indestructible old people. Arc ends with Sasuke returning to the Leaf + Madara becoming to his full power. Madara returning is what prompts Oonoki to vote yes on United Shinobi Army.
-Then you get the Shinobi World War arc.

But because of time the two arcs were smashed into one giant mess. So Kabuto joins fake Madara for no reason; fake Madara explains his evil plan (in detail) to the Kage for no reason, and Sasuke pinballs between wanting to destroy the Leaf and wanting to save the Leaf, the latter for no reason.

The fan theorizing on ASoIaF was insane. I mean, the theory posted above clearly had a lot of work put into it, but the basis is literally "King's Landing had 7 entrances, what else had 7 entrances? THEBES!" and then going off on the assumption this connection is intentional and critical to understanding the story rather than a dumb coincidence. Since Martin kept the story fairly open, this kind of fan rationalization was rampant.

But anyway I always liked Dehario Neharis and Euron Greyjoy were the same person theory.

I know a lot of these are presented in the spirit of good fun, so I'm doing my damndest to not be a wet blanket about some of these. I generally find fan theories pretty dumb and generally wastes of time.

I'll channel good vibes instead and offer this thread, which I chuckled at.

Another good one is that the events of Harry Potter were all in his head as a coping mechanism for the abuse and he never got out from under the stairs.

It does hold up pretty well to scrutiny, and Rowling has addressed it and didnt debunk it.

The Filoni Clone Wars cartoon in told from a Republic/Jedi-POV, and serves as Republic propaganda. The newsreel style intros are evidence of this.

The Tartakovsky Clone Wars cartoon is fold from a separatist-POV, and tells a darker but more honest accounting.
